“Almost like a hike.”

UUfie’s renovated Belfountain House in Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment is organised around the slope of the land, with spaces unfolding through gradual transitions, changing views and moments of pause.

The 430-square-metre chalet preserves the northern portion of the original 1970s structure while transforming the southern half within its existing footprint. A single elongated roof brings both portions together, following the slope of the site.

“We were interested in how the house could feel less like an object placed on the land and more like something shaped by it,” says UUfie cofounder Irene Gardpoit.

As cofounder Eiri Ota describes it, “We imagined the experience almost like a hike.”

Thank you Dezeen for featuring Belfountain House, and to Kate Mazade for the story.

Continuing the exploration and reigniting the energy of the studio through ideas, experimentation, and dialogue.

This architectural competition invited us to step beyond our ongoing work and imagine new possibilities for cultural spaces and public life.

We are drawn to projects that bring people together in a platform for connection, exchange, and shared experiences.

Revontulet
Helsinki Museum Proposal

Revontulet in Finnish for “fox fires,” is a cultural museum proposal for Helsinki inspired by the atmospheric qualities of auroral light. The design explores how movement and reflection can shape an immersive public and exhibition experience rooted in Finnish identity and the waterfront context.

The architectural form is defined by fluid, undulating geometry and a dynamic façade layered with iridescent material. By day, the building reflects the movement of water and sky; by night, it transforms into a glowing civic landmark reminiscent of the Northern Lights.

A key design strategy is the integration of public and cultural space. A central public plaza extends into the building, connecting exterior and interior life and supporting activities such as gathering, learning, dining, and leisure. Circulation is continuous and experiential, with ramps and stairs guiding visitors through varied spatial conditions from open social areas to quiet contemplative galleries.

Some of the most meaningful design moments are the quietest.

At Belfountain House, concealed storage, crafted millwork, integrated handles, and thoughtful thresholds come together to support the rituals of everyday life. Details that don't ask for attention but, simply make living feel effortless.

Peacock draws inspiration from the quiet choreography of nature, where a flower blooms and a bird moves through courtship, holding fleeting moments of beauty just long enough to be remembered. The piece seeks to preserve that transience, freezing elegance in time.

Part of an ongoing exploration of material, fabrication, and form.

Lake Cottage’s interior, wrapped in whitewashed birch, unfolds as a series of playful discoveries. Fourteen carefully framed openings, a central hearth, and a carved log stair leading to a hidden reading nook create a warm and immersive space that sparks imagination and invites contemplation.
