IPE railings can turn almost black after years of dirt and buildup, but that doesn’t mean the wood is ruined.

A proper wash removes that dark layer and starts revealing the natural colour and grain hiding underneath. On IPE, the difference can be especially dramatic.

Before replacing or covering weathered wood, find out if the original surface can be restored.

Choosing a stain colour can be one of the hardest parts of restoring natural wood.

Molly loved the cedar on her deck, but she was nervous about choosing a colour that would change the natural look too much. That’s exactly why we do a test patch before staining the entire project.

It lets the homeowner see how the colour actually looks on their own wood and approve it before we move forward.

A small test patch can prevent a very expensive colour mistake.

Sometimes the biggest difference happens before the oil even goes on.

This deck was stripped and sanded to remove the old finish and weathered surface, revealing the natural wood underneath. That prep also gives the oil a clean surface to properly pe*****te.

Once the oil goes on, the colour and grain come back while the wood gets the protection it needs going forward.

Sanding and oiling can save a deck that looks much further gone than it actually is.

IPE can look almost beyond saving when years of dirt and buildup turn it dark.

Underneath all that black grime, the original wood can still be there. A proper wash removes the buildup and starts bringing the natural colour and grain of the IPE back out.

The close-ups show the difference immediately, but the full before and after really puts it into perspective.

Don’t assume dark, dirty wood needs to be replaced.

Sometimes we have a little fun with the finishing touches.

It’s a good way to see just how much the oil brings the natural colour and grain of the wood back out.

Then it was time to finish the entire deck and give the wood the protection it needs.

A little craftsmanship before the final coat.

Your wood deck should get a deep clean about once a year.

Dirt, algae, mildew, pollen, and weathered buildup slowly collect on the surface. Besides making the deck look dirty, that buildup can become slippery and cause problems when it’s time to oil or refinish the wood.

The key is using a wood-safe cleaner and controlled pressure. Too much pressure can damage the wood fibres and leave permanent lines.

Regular cleaning keeps the wood looking better and prepares it properly for whatever protection comes next.

A power washer can do a lot of damage when it’s used incorrectly.

This porch was supposed to be cleaned and ready for sanding, but peeling paint was left behind, sections were completely missed, and the pressure was uneven across the wood. Some areas were even gouged from getting too close or using the wrong tip.

Now the wood has lines, rough fibres, and extra damage that all needs to be fixed before the restoration can continue.

Power washing is supposed to make the next step easier, not create more work.
