Sneak Peek! Almost Ready for possession!
We’re getting down to the final details on this beautiful home, and we couldn’t resist sharing a little sneak peek!
From the custom kitchen and stunning stonework to the vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and beautiful herringbone flooring, this home has come together exactly the way a custom home should. thoughtfully designed and built around the people who will call it home.
There’s still a few finishing touches to go, but we’re getting very close to handing the keys over to the owners!
It’s always exciting to see a project go from plans on paper to a finished home.
Stay tuned for the final reveal!

Lakefront Dream Home Taking Shape!

There's something exciting about watching a custom home come together from the ground up. This stunning lakefront build is really starting to show its character, with the structural framing almost complete and the expansive covered deck designed to make the most of those incredible waterfront views.
From engineered roof systems to large windows that bring the outdoors in, every detail is being built with quality, functionality, and longevity in mind. The covered upper deck will provide year-round enjoyment while protecting the outdoor living space from Alberta's ever-changing weather.

At MER-CON Homes & Renovations, we believe a custom home should be built around your lifestyle, your property, and your vision—not a one-size-fits-all floor plan.

This project is moving along nicely, and we can't wait to share more progress as it comes together!

Vinyl Siding vs. Engineered Wood Siding

Choosing exterior siding is about balancing appearance, durability, maintenance, and budget. Here’s a quick comparison homeowners should know before building or renovating:
Vinyl Siding - Lower upfront cost
- Very low maintenance
- No painting required
- Resistant to moisture and rot
- Large variety of colors and profiles
Things to consider: • Can crack from heavy impact or extreme cold
• More traditional “builder-grade” appearance
• Color fading can happen over time

Engineered Wood Siding

- Richer, more premium wood-grain appearance
- Stronger impact resistance than vinyl
- Adds great curb appeal
- Available in modern and traditional styles
- Excellent option for custom homes and acreages
Things to consider: • Higher material and installation cost
- Proper installation is crucial.

In our experience, vinyl is a great low-maintenance option for budget-conscious builds, while engineered wood siding are popular for homeowners wanting a higher-end look with added durability.
Every home, budget, and style is different, choosing the right siding can make a huge difference in both appearance and long-term maintenance.

Dreaming about building on an acreage but not sure where to start?

For many people, the hardest part of a new acreage build is knowing what needs to happen first.

Plans… permits… site prep… septic… utilities… budgeting… there are a lot of pieces that all need to come together before construction even starts.

That’s why having the right team involved early makes a huge difference. We help walk clients through the process from the initial planning stages right through the build, helping make the process feel clear and manageable instead of overwhelming.

Whether you already own land or are just starting to explore the idea of building your dream acreage home, we’re here to help answer questions and point you in the right direction.

Thinking about building? Reach out and let’s start the conversation.

Thinking about a walkout basement? Here’s why it comes with a higher price tag 👇

A walkout basement isn’t just a “nice-to-have” — it’s a completely different level of planning, excavation, and structural work.

More excavation & hauling
You’re not just digging down — you’re cutting into grade and shaping the lot to allow for proper drainage and access. That means more machine time and more material to move.

Additional concrete & structural work
Retaining walls, stepped footings, and taller wall sections all add complexity (and cost). These foundations aren’t cookie-cutter.

Drainage is critical
Managing water around a walkout is a big deal. Extra weeping tile, proper grading, and sometimes engineered drainage solutions are required to keep your basement dry long-term.

Framing & finishing differences
Larger openings for doors and windows, plus structural headers and insulation details, all add up compared to a standard basement.

Site-specific challenges
Every lot is different. Slopes, soil conditions, and access can all impact how much extra work is needed.

The result? More usable space, better natural light, and direct backyard access — but it takes more work to get there.

If you’re planning a build and considering a walkout, it’s worth understanding the “why” behind the cost.
