Sometimes we come with sweat stains and sawdust. And other times we come home with helmets FULL of morels! Our favourite type of mushroom. Where were we working? We’ll never tell!!

Tent caterpillars. They’re a natural part of our ecosystem but they sure can do a number on our trees. If we find them on our fruit trees we try to get rid of them. Sometimes, if we’re feeling brave, we’ll squish them with our finger 🤢. Other days we’ll just brush them off the tree with a broom 🧹, and come back later and do it again.

Spring always seems to come achingly slow and then light speed fast. It feels like we go from ‘why is it still so cold out’ to ‘ugh I wish these trees would leaf out so I can get some shade from this sun’ in a matter of days.

Spring creates this sense of urgency to get everything done. For us we feel the urgency to get as much done as possible before the blackflies and mosquitoes 🦟 get bad. Cause we know they’re coming and these cool but warm days without bugs are miracles we don’t want to waste.

So we’ve been busy with tree work… so many trees! But we’ve also made time to plant some fruit and nut trees - peach, apple, plum, pear, oak and northern pecan (😮 we’ll see how that one goes… well maybe not us but the next generation will see how that one goes 😂). We’ve put up some bat boxes for our 🦇 friends, swallow boxes for the birds 🐦, fenced in the trees for the 🦌 and discovered an old split rail fence during a Managed Forest Plan walk.

So, spring has sprung and we’re diving right in!

Sometimes when we’re in Little Current we have wood chips we need to get rid.
Sometimes we don’t plan ahead for it.
Sometimes we call up Shane and see if they want wood chips for whatever mushroom adventure they’re on.
And sometimes he says yes!
And if he says yes, he ALWAYS sends us home with a box of mushrooms!
How lucky are we!? This time we came home with lions mane mushrooms and we can’t wait to fry them up and add some butter and soy sauce. This island is an amazing place to live!

When we first built our house on our property we told ourselves ‘every year let’s plant 2 or 3 fruit trees, start a food forest.’ Well, our order from one of the companies we purchase from came in today. It’s a bit of a problem when neither of us says ‘maybe that’s enough for this year.’ But we’re so excited spring is here! Now we need to find some shovels and dig some holes!

It’s one of our favourite time of year- syrup season! Sometimes winter seems to drag on and on, but then BHAM! spring hits us hard with sunshine and warm days and that glorious ‘plink, plunk, ploonk’ sound of maple sap hitting the bottom of the bucket.

Maple syrup always starts us into the busy season and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Soon we’ll be full time into hauling brush, moving wood and pruning trees, but right now we’re just drinking sap straight from the bucket and soaking up the sun.

Sure feels like spring today. Finally! We’re slowly getting back into the trees after hibernating this winter. We started with pruning the branches off of this Manitoba maple away from a clients roof. Bring on more sun and warm weather!!

MULCH! $5! We have lots of mulch. Come and fill up you garbage can, recycling bin, Rubbermaid, Tupperware, car trunk (we’ve done it and we suggest putting a tarp down first 😬), bucket, feed bag, whatever you want! Only catch is that you have to shovel it yourself 💪. Throw $5 in the tin or e-transfer $5 for every garbage can you take…. roughly. We’re not going to measure your containers, just pay what you think.

Located at 3707 Hwy 542, Mindemoya (in the hamlet of Big Lake). Multiple mulch piles for you to choose from in the clearing right next to the road. Help yourself. One shovel is provided.

It’s been 10 years since we started this business and we’re taking a look back at some of our adventures!

We used to chip into the back of our truck… and then slide and shovel it out. Thankfully we upgraded to a dump box a few years ago. Ahhhh the sweet sound of the hydraulic lift.
