Did you know you can grow shiitake mushrooms in your backyard? Self sufficiency is a journey. You start by replacing one item you no longer need to purchase, and then another and then another. Mushrooms are easy to grow, especially outdoors. If I can do it, so can you. I encourage you to make this the year you try.

It’s seed saving time. 🌸💕 One of my favourites is hollyhock. It’s beautiful, drought tolerant, and best of all can handle our zone 3 winters. Is this plum tree going to produce like the ones in the Okanagan? No. But did it did produce? Yes!! This year I get to enjoy 5 beautiful plums, and for a second year plum tree, that works for me 💕

You can grow all kinds of things in Zone 3. Cold hardy fruit trees are a thing. We’re growing backyard plums, pears, cherries, apples, grapes and apricots. What are you growing? Which one should I add? I feel like I have room for one more tree.

Wild blue bells in the compost bin 💕 Mertensia paniculata (Tall Lungwort, Bluebells) Not to be confused with the creeping bell flower which is a nasty w**d I’m currently fighting on the other side of the garden. These beauties are harmless and a lovely addition.
