You plug something in. Nothing happens. You try another outlet — that one works fine.

So what's actually wrong with the dead one?

Abbotsford homeowners, here are the three most common causes we find:

1. A tripped GFCI somewhere upstream. One GFCI outlet can control several other outlets downstream. The dead outlet in your living room might be wired through the GFCI in your bathroom. Press RESET on every GFCI in the house — the dead outlet might come right back to life.

2. A broken backstab connection. Builders often push wires into the back of an outlet instead of wrapping them around the screw terminals. Over time, the spring weakens and the wire loses contact. Common in Abbotsford homes built in the 80s and 90s.

3. A tripped or failed breaker. If nothing resets it and the outlet still reads dead on a tester, the breaker itself may have failed. Breakers don't last forever — especially in older panels.

We show up with a multimeter, test the circuit in minutes, and fix it in the same visit. Most dead outlet calls in Abbotsford are done within an hour.

Spring means BBQs, pressure washers, string lights, and kids in the yard. Before any of that happens — take a 5-minute walk around the outside of your house.

Here's what to check:

☑ GFCI outlets — press TEST, then RESET. If nothing happens, the outlet is dead and you have zero shock protection. Replace it before you plug anything in this season.

☑ String light circuits — if last year's patio lights stayed up through winter, check the connections and cord insulation. Make sure they're on a GFCI-protected outlet.

☑ Extension cords — outdoor-rated cords only. Indoor cords left outside through BC rain get brittle and crack. Toss them.

☑ Hot tub disconnects — if you shut the tub down for winter, have the GFCI breaker tested before you fire it back up.

Most homes we visit have at least one outdoor issue hiding in plain sight. It takes minutes to find — but finding it after someone gets a shock is too late.

⚡ Metro Vancouver homeowners — here's a 5-second test that could save a life.

GFCI outlets (the ones with TEST and RESET buttons) cut power in milliseconds when they detect current leaking where it shouldn't — into a wet hand, a dropped hairdryer, a damaged extension cord in the rain.

BC code requires GFCI protection in:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchen counter outlets
- Garages and unfinished basements
- Laundry rooms
- Outdoor receptacles
- Anywhere within 1.5m of a sink

Most homes built before 1990 are missing them in at least one spot. And plenty of newer homes have GFCIs that have quietly failed and never been replaced.

Try this right now:

1. Press TEST — power should cut.
2. Press RESET — power back on.

If nothing happens, the GFCI is dead. It offers zero protection until it's replaced.
