A breakfast meeting this morning, then a job. Then lunch. Then trying to decide whether to go on another job (an hour drive each way, plus 1-1.5 hours on site) or to take a nap.
Elna Adams Jeanes decided for me. I can do the job and she will take the nap.
So I’m on site, sitting on the back of the van, listening to her sleep-breathing. Ready to go home but don’t want to wake her.
Life is good. Alhamdulillah ❤️

This 3 week old tweet from Columbia Missouri's Fire Department emphasizes the importance of requesting a locate, and hand excavating near marked utilities after the locate. Luckily these two guys got away with minor non-life threatening injuries and minor damage to the home. However, it could have been far worse for the excavators and the surrounding community. Always call before you dig.

Please always be aware and considerate. It is not an uncommon site to see utility locators surveying along roadsides or on the roads themselves. We do what we do to help excavators to work as safely as possible. We care about your safety, please care about ours. Slow down, give space and keep your eyes on the road. Another day and another locate in the books! I am so fortunate to have a job that I love and am passionate about. Knowing that I am helping ensure that excavating is able to be done as safe as possible is a great feeling. Never forget if you need a shovel, you need to Call Before You Dig. The electric company inspector is testing a line broken during excavation. This was operator error, note the red paint on the asphalt accurately marking the line. The operator did not hand dig to expose within a meter of the red mark. Orange paint was added by the crew after the strike. The job shut down while the crew attended a training session on excavating safety procedures highlighting "hand dig to expose within a meter of an underground facility."

This line is interesting because both the city and electric company came out to inspect and there was no record of it anywhere. It was also not connected to any grid, so putting a signal onto the electric grid could not locate it.

The finding and confirming of known utilities, usually by conduction, would not have discovered this line. Doing an inductive two-person sweep looking for unknown lines adds a extra layer of confidence to a locate.

Looking at the composition of the line, it appeared to be about 100 years old! And it was dead, thankfully.
