Excited to share our fine tuned subtrades vetting process.

It starts with doing a thorough search of our ideal candidates.

That is followed by a phone interview where we discover how they treat their clients, communicate and how they handle difficult situations.

If their response lines up with our values, then we setup an in person interview. This is where we see how they show up and we ask questions to see if they're in alignment with our standards.

The next step is to check their references and their work quality.

Our jobs follow the Golden Vista guarantee. Which is, if any trades fall short of our standards, we will ensure the work gets redone at no additional cost to our clients.

We always welcome questions and feedback.

It happens to us all, sometimes we get too focused on pleasing our clients and we end up overseeing the obvious.

Case in point, this kitchen.
The client wants to keep the same layout and that's just what we were going to do.

Thankfully we have great, knowledgeable and experienced trades. Our installer noticed a flaw on this layout.
The flaw is with keeping the dishwasher in the same location, because it means that the support on the edge next to the stove will be weak.
So he suggested swapping the cabinet and dishwasher locations.
Not only will the countertop have better structural support, but by having cabinets with drawers on either side of the range gives you better access to what you need for cooking.

We spoke to the client and they were happy with the observation and approved the layout change.

I'm grateful for a great team, that speaks up when they see something that can be better 🙏

Here's a good way to vet your contractors before you start talking to them about your project.

I recently came across a post on Facebook where someone interested in doing a kitchen remodel posted some basic details about what they envision along with a few pictures and asked some excellent questions.

Before discussing all the details with anyone, they had a pre-qualification process to ensure that they don't waste their time nor the contractors' time.

Their request was:
- provide your business license info
- provide your insurance documents
- supply a worksafe clearance letter
- provide pictures of past kitchen projects

Now, to some this may be simple, basic or even obvious information request.
However this is the first time that I've seen anyone ask for this and it makes complete sense.

This information will quickly w**d out unqualified contractors that don't have the most basic requirements to protect their clients.

I'd suggest three additional steps

1. Read their reviews to see what type of experience their past clients shared
2. Social proof them by checking their social media
3. Ask for references

Wishing you a stress-free renovation 🙏

In this video we show a fully renovated condo in downtown Vancouver.
New floor, new paint, new appliances, kitchen and bathroom refreshes.

Thankfully our client agreed to get all the outlets, switches and telephone jacks updated.

Sometimes a small update makes a significant impact. Can you imagine what would be the first thing that your eyes would gravitate towards if we hadn't changed those?

Sounds cheesy but it is true that it is the little things that tend to make a big impact.

We're shifting towards being more environmentally friendly.

We got approval from our client to post the cabinets and appliances for free and we are excited to have them on board.

It never feels good to throw stuff away that could be used by someone else.

Moving forward we will be doing the same thing as long as our clients are OK with it.

Let's take care of our planet 🙏

Three top designers told me how they spot a good builder!

Yesterday, at the Interior Design Show Vancouver, I asked Annalise Kelly, Rebecca Foster, and Madeline Slowek what the biggest hurdle is when working with contractors.

Their answers pointed the same way: bring the builder in early.
Before permit, before the design is locked. Otherwise the budget conversation happens too late, and clients get blindsided.

And Madeline said you can spot a great builder by whether they want to sit in on design meetings.

Even without a designer on the job, I've learned one thing: one hard budget conversation at the start beats ten painful ones halfway through.

If you're planning a renovation, ask your builder one question: 'Will you be in the design meetings?' Their answer will tell you a lot.

Sometimes we are asked to move a switch and when we do so, there are times when things just align and go smooth, while other times it becomes quite complex due to many variables.
In this video we explain some potential challenges and what may be required to move a switch.

We hope that you find this useful and if you want anything else explained, just reach out amd we'd be happy to answer questions and perhaps even do a video about it.
