Septic Tip: Seasonal cottage or cabin? Hold off on that fall pump-out. It’s better to leave your septic tank full for the winter. If you do need to pump it out, make sure the tank is refilled with water or wastewater before winter. Why? An empty tank can float out of the ground during the spring thaw when groundwater levels rise, causing costly damage.
Year-round system? Pump your tank when it’s due or as needed.

Happy Septic Awareness Week!

Because it does its job underground, your septic system can be easy to overlook. We’re here to help you understand what makes yours tick. Start with three simple questions:

• Do you know where your septic tank and leaching bed are?
• Do you know when your system was last inspected—or when the tank was last pumped?
• Do you know what should—and shouldn’t—go down your drains?

If any of these questions gives you pause, we have a great place to start.

Your tile bed needs some space.

Trees and shrubs should be kept at least 15 feet away from your tile bed — and larger, water-loving trees like willows, birch, cedar, and poplars should be at least 20 feet away.

Roots can clog tile lines, invade vulnerable areas, and lead to backups or slow drainage. If you spot saplings growing on or near the bed, remove them before the roots become a bigger problem.

Lime in the outhouse? It’s an old-school fix that can create a whole new problem.

Lime changes the conditions in the pit, interfering with the beneficial bacteria that break down waste. When decomposition slows, solids build up and the pit fills faster.

If you want to control odour, don’t work against the biology doing the dirty work.

Septic Tip: toilet paper only, please.

Wipes, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, diapers, and other non-toilet paper items do not belong in your septic system — regardless of what the packaging claims.

These products can cause blockages, backups, and extra strain on your system.

Yes, we’ve heard this one before. Please don’t.

Your septic needs healthy microbial activity — but not just any organic matter will do. Roadkill, yogurt, and dead mice won’t give your tank the targeted bacteria it needs. They can add more burden to the system instead of helping it work better.

EcoEthic Septic Treatment adds beneficial bacteria formulated for septic systems, helping break down common household waste and support regular septic care.
