Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens

Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens OPEN The Friends of the Gardens society raises funds to pay gardeners and sponsor public workshops and programs.

On the hills overlooking spectacular Lake Okanagan, the Summerland Ornamental Gardens were founded in 1916 as part of the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre. The Research Centre and Gardens were developed to assist pioneer orchardists in the wilderness of the Okanagan Valley to grow fruit, as well as trees and flowers for their home gardens. In 1991, a local group of citizens formed the Friends of

the Research Station Gardens Society to work in collaboration with Agriculture Canada to maintain the gardens. Summerland Ornamental Gardens is a showpiece of gardening possibilities and options in the Okanagan Valley for local residents and visitors.

Coleus is one of my favourite annual plants. The plant comes in a variety of colours, and leaf shapes. It usually flowers in late summer, with blue flower spikes. To encourage a thicker growth, pinch off the flowers. They tolerate sun, shade, and heat, but do best in partial to full-shade.

The Gardens are open! With the lifting of the evacuation alert we have the all clear to open the gates to the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. Hours are 8 am to 8 pm until September 7, when they shift to 8 am to 6 pm. The perfect location to wander, relax and let go of some stress.

The Ornamental Gardens are closed until the evacuation alert is lifted for Summerland. As soon as this happens the gardeners and volunteers will be back in full force! An approved visit last Friday to the Gardens revealed that they are in good shape. How is everyone doing? Be sure to throw your windows open and enjoy the fresh air today!

Sadly, Summerland is experiencing an unprecedented event. Our town will never be the same. Our friends and neighbors have lost their homes, and we wait anxiously for the fires to be controlled before we can even think about coming home. Because of all this uncertainty, the August 23 Art and Music event is CANCELLED. We have been unable to check in on our beloved Ornamental Gardens. They are outside of the fire line, however. We will keep you updated once we know more. Please feel free to pass this information on to all your friends and family. Thank you.

Summerland is experiencing an unprecedented event. Our town will never be the same, our friends and neighbors have lost their homes and we wait anxiously for the fires to be controlled before we can even think about coming home. Amaranthus sp. This beautiful hardy annual can be found on one of the entrances to the great lawn at the gardens. It can also be known as the Golden Giant Amaranth. The plant loves warm, sunny locations and grows rapidly, reaching impressive heights. Its deep root system gives it a good drought tolerance in well-drained soi. Photos 📷 July, 2026

In spite of it being a smokey day, the 110th Anniversary of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens was well attended. Some came out dressed in period costume, others were content to listen to the musician, Gordon McLaren perform. A few people took the opportunity to have a picnic, after all it was a farm picnic event. The Summerland Museum put on a lovely display booth and had costumes on hand for people to dress up in. Vanilla ice cream and Staccato cherries were also available by donation. Thank you to all that attended and the Summerland Museum for helping out with the photo trail around the gardens.
