Maple Tree Pruning

I don't normally prune maples in the winter; however, it is a good time of year to assess the internal structure of the tree, and if there is any broken branches, it is a good time to cut them out and mark the permanent scaffold of the tree. Remember maple trees have a decurrent growth habit and tend to form multiple or secondary trunks, developing into a more rounded crown. It is my practice to train maple trees to a single trunk until growth of tree reaches 1/4 of its mature growth. I will then allow dominant secondary growth to compete with central leader.
In the picture, I have a silver maple with broken central leader. I do not want secondary growth to take over. I am considering my options on how to best retrain this damaged tree.

Pruning Haskap

I have been experimenting with different pruning techniques on haskap plants in order to optimize mechanical harvesting. The harvester my customer has, has a narrow neck opening which allows haskap plants to move through a baffle system of plates which move back and forth, allowing plant to pass through. However, if the plant is too wide the baffles cannot close properly and a large percentage of berries fall to the ground. I am attempting to prune the plants to a single stem or double stem, as long as double stems are linear in row. In subsequent years as new shoots develop, they will be tied to the central stem creating a collar effect where the crown of the plant can then be allowed to bush out. This method of pruning is specific to this particular farm's mechanical harvester.
The ideal harvesting zone of this harvester is between 16" and 48". By lifting the crown and training the new stems, the overall girth of the lower unharvestable zone, the 0"-16" will be minimized, allowing the harvester to pass freely through the rows and the harvester to work properly, increasing the harvest potential.

Winter Pruning

While many trees benefit from winter pruning there are some things to consider before one starts sawing away. The winter is a good time to see the internal structure of the tree. There are two main growth habits that trees have. One is excurrent, which typically has a dominant central leader; e.g lindens, gingko, pine and the other, decurrent, which tends to have a more rounded crown with multiple secondary trunks growing from the main trunk, e.g maples, magnolia, elm. It is good to determine the natural growth pattern of the tree before you start pruning; this will help you in determining the best branches to remove. And remember, never prune for the sake of pruning; there has to be a reason and a why to prune; once you determine the natural growth habit of the tree you can ask yourself how to best achieve the overall structure of the tree that is to be desired.
