That thirty seconds of "gym bag" air when your A/C first kicks on? You're not imagining it — and it isn't just what old houses smell like.

It has a name in the trade: dirty sock syndrome. And the smell has an address. Here's where it actually lives:

1️⃣ The coil. Your evaporator coil sits cold, wet and dusty all summer — a buffet. Biofilm takes hold on the fins, and every start-up pushes that air into your home before the coil dries off.

2️⃣ The pan & drain. Condensate is supposed to drain away. A clogged drain leaves standing water sitting under the coil, quietly growing the thing you're smelling.

3️⃣ The ducts. Ducts are the reservoir, not the source. They store and redistribute the odour — but growth needs water, and the wet parts are upstream.

The good news: most of this is fixable in a single visit — but the order matters. Coil and pan first, ducts second. Do it backwards and the smell walks right back into your freshly cleaned ductwork on the next cooling cycle.

Summer Window Condensation

Moisture on your windows in July? Don't wipe it — read it. 🪟

Winter condensation is normal. Summer condensation is your house telling you something. And the question that decodes it takes two seconds:

Which side of the glass is wet?

✅ Inside — you can wipe it off. Your indoor humidity is high enough to condense on A/C-cooled glass. Health Canada says keep it below 50% in summer. Find the moisture source.
✅ Outside — morning dew that burns off. Usually GOOD news: it often means your windows are insulating properly. A drafty old window wouldn't do this.
✅ Between the panes — you can't wipe either side and it's still foggy. The sealed unit has failed. No home remedy exists.
✅ The good news on that last one: it's usually just the glass that needs replacing, not the whole window. Get it priced before anyone sells you new windows.
✅ Sweating toilet tank or damp basement windows? Different problem — that one's real, and it's a dehumidifier conversation.

Deer Mouse vs. House Mouse (Why It Matters)
