Things are moving along slowly on this harvest site. The warm weather and rain last week made harvesting tough but it looks like we’ll finally have enough winter to get things finished up. Even with the rain things are looking good on site, the contractor worked hard to get wood cleaned up before the rain and then shut the forwarder down until conditions improved. Most of these photos are from the overstory removal portion of this job which ended up being just about 2 hectares (5 acres). The guys took great care and protected a lot of advanced regeneration so we’ve got a big head start on the next forest here. Now onto 4 hectares of thinning and then we are done here for the winter!!!

Happy to finally be getting started on this harvest site. The machines landed yesterday and processed all of the wood that had been cut to build our road. They were in the woods today starting to harvest. This site will be an interesting one as it has multiple treatments to be carried out including overstory removal, commercial thinning, irregular shelterwood and some understory thinning. I will put more descriptions with the pictures and will have more updates and photos as the work progresses.

It was a beautiful day to be in the woods working today and we are finally getting some cold weather and frost in the ground making conditions better for hauling wood. We have to haul across a field on this job and it’s nice to finally be getting some wood roadside.

While out finishing up some layout work for an upcoming harvest (more on that later this week) I stopped in to look at a nearby hardwood stand on this lot. It is well stocked with quality ash and maple that are about ready for a light thinning. While the Emerald Ash Borer hasn’t reached Hants county yet, it’s not far away. Even if we don’t decide to harvest, this stand will require extra attention over the coming years to monitor for potential infestations.

And here we go!!! First post to the page and first logging job of the winter. This harvest for a client in Stewiacke is targeting patches of fir that are starting to show signs of declining vigour. This woodlot was cut hard in the 80’s with no follow up post harvest. As a result, it is dominated by short lived species that are not thriving. The goal of the small (1/4 acre or less) patches is to make space for better quality seedlings to start growing. A portion of the profits earned from the sale of forest products will go to pay for seedlings that will be planted this spring. It’s a long process to restore a woodlot, but there is no better time to start than now!
