St. Marys Community Players St. Theatre in St. Marys began in the late 1940's with Rev. Parson's rendition of The Desert Song. Marys Little Theatre. Marys Community Players. Marys.

Marys Community Players (SMCP) is a vibrant not-for-profit and award-winning community theatre group that has been illuminating the stage since its inception in 1974. There were only three costumes rented for that production, as more than 60 volunteers from St. Marys and area designed, cut and sewed the rest of the costumes from old drapes, curtains and sheets (it sounds as if they took a page from Scarlett O'Hara's 'cape from the drapes' in Gone With the Wind!). The performance of The Desert Song was a huge success, releasing the "theatre bug" into the town and ultimately leading to the formation of the St. After setting the goal of their membership campaign at 1000, the group was no doubt delighted when the first day found 800 signed on and a full waiting list by the end of the week! Successful dramas filled the next ten years, some good enough to compete in the prestigious Dominion Drama Festivals. The advent of television stole the attention from live theatre and a talented theatre community lay dormant. It wasn't until October of 1974 that the Little Theatre was re-born as St. Since that time, the group has produced years of excellent comedies, dramas and musicals, including Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Guys & Dolls, Music Man, On Golden Pond, The Odd Couple, The Mouse Trap, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Mame and many others. [For more recent productions, see the Photos of Past Productions page link at the top of this page.]

In 1981, a contest was held to design a logo for SMCP. Peggy McQuirk's logo was outstanding in combining the theatre mask with the letters in our name

Community Players is blessed with a host of dedicated people who offer their talents in production areas such as producing and administration, costuming, hair design, set design, construction, decoration and "front-of-house" ushering and ticket selling. These jobs are every bit as important to the success of any production as the more obvious directors, actors and musicians. The door is always open to anyone who is interested in taking part in community theatre in St. Come on out to audition for a role, help backstage (where another "show" simultaneously goes on quietly in the dark!), or join the audience. Whatever your choice, we feel sure that you will enjoy the experience.

GOOD GRIEF! WHAT'S A SITZPROBE?

It's a funny word for one of the most exciting moments in musical theatre! And ours was like a Peanuts Pajama Party!
A 'Sitzprobe' (pronounced SITS-proh-buh) is the first time the cast and musicians come together to rehearse the show's music. No costumes, no choreography, no fancy footwork — just voices, instruments, pajamas and the wonderful moment when everything starts to come together!
And that's exactly what's happening with the Peanuts Gang as we get ready to bring You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown to the Town Hall Theatre stage!

From Snoopy's show-stopping "Suppertime" to the heartwarming "Happiness," our cast and musicians are finding their rhythm, and we can't wait for you to hear the results!

GOOD GRIEF AGAIN: TICKETS ARE GOING FAST!
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally and Schroeder are almost ready for YOU! Don't wait until the last minute to join the fun!

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally and Schroeder are coming to the historic Town Hall Theatre as St. Marys Community Players (SMCP) brings Charles M. Schulz’s beloved comic strip to life in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, running Oct. 22 to Nov. 7.

From Charlie Brown’s misadventures on the baseball diamond to Lucy’s unsolicited advice, Linus’s beloved blanket, Schroeder’s devotion to Beethoven and Snoopy’s larger-than-life imagination, the whole Peanuts Gang is here.

Featuring favourite songs including Happiness, The Kite, Suppertime and My Blanket and Me, this charming musical celebrates childhood worries, quiet hopes, friendship and the little things that make life wonderful.

“There’s plenty of laughter and great music, but also a lot of heart,” says Gregory George, SMCP Board President. These characters and their experiences are wonderfully universal. After all, we’ve all had Charlie Brown days.”

Directed by Peter Van Wart, with Musical Direction by Jocelyn Nicholson, the production features Dave Humphrey as Charlie Brown, Rachel Napolitano as Lucy, Hannah Bennett as Sally, Matthew Schell as Linus, Marc Motiejunas as Schroeder and Mia Leone as Snoopy.

Set Designer Ray Doerksen has transformed the Town Hall stage into a colourful Peanuts Playground, complete with a nostalgic carousel inspired by Van Wart’s childhood memories.

Producers Stevens and Stephen Brockwell lead the production, with Fern Pridham on costumes, Alan Grogan on lighting, and Vanni Azzano on sound.

“We hope audiences leave the theatre smiling — and perhaps thinking a little differently about the small things that make them happy,” adds George.

Happiness Is ... Saving $5 on Preview Night

Even Lucy would approve of this deal. Audiences attending the Thursday, Oct. 22 Preview Night will save $5 off regular ticket prices.

Whether you grew up with the Peanuts Gang or are meeting them for the first time, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown promises an evening steeped in delightful whimsy, nostalgia and the cozy comfort of a beloved favourite.

OPENING NIGHT IS JUST 10 DAYS AWAY!

GOOD GRIEF… after months of rehearsals, building, painting, singing, dancing and dreaming, the Peanuts Gang is finally ready to take centre stage!

There’s nothing quite like Opening Night in the theatre. The house begins to fill, the orchestra strikes the first notes, the lights dim…and suddenly months of hard work, laughter, nerves, creativity — and perhaps a few tears — burst into life under the spotlight.

For everyone involved with SMCP's You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, this production has been an extraordinary journey.

Our cast, creative team, crew and volunteers have poured their hearts into bringing the wonderfully nostalgic world of Charles M. Schulz to life — and in 10 days we finally get to share our Peanuts Playground with YOU!

Opening Night is made even more special by the friends, families, fellow performers and theatre lovers who come to cheer us on. Your laughter, applause and support are part of the magic.

So come spend an evening with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally and Schroeder and rediscover the little joys, disappointments, friendships and wonderfully funny moments that have made the Peanuts Gang beloved for generations.

Sally Brown has a philosophy for just about everything — and if the old one doesn’t work, she’ll simply find a “New Philosophy!"

Charlie Brown’s spirited little sister is clever, determined and delightfully unpredictable. Whether she’s wrestling with school assignments, questioning the logic of the grown-up world or dreaming about her beloved “Sweet Babboo,” Sally has a wonderfully unique way of looking at life.

She may not always have the answers — but that certainly won’t stop her from having an opinion!

DIRECTORS & PRODUCERS — WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU!

A mystery. A murder. A marriage. And a playwright whose imagination may have gone a little too far...

SMCP is looking for a Director and Producers to bring Bernard Slade's deliciously clever psychological thriller, An Act of the Imagination, to the Town Hall Theatre stage in spring 2027! It's a wonderfully intriguing play, full of unexpected twists, suspicious characters and just enough misdirection to keep audiences guessing until the final curtain.

We're looking for creative, enthusiastic theatre people who would love to take on this production and help us bring a terrific evening of suspense to life.

Whether you're an experienced director or producer, or someone who's been waiting for the right opportunity to step into one of these roles, **we'd love to hear from you!

Never underestimate a boy with a blanket!
Wise beyond his years, thoughtful and surprisingly philosophical, Linus is the Peanuts Gang’s resident voice of reason. Whether he’s sharing his wisdom, defending his belief in the Great Pumpkin or navigating life with his bossy big sister Lucy, Linus approaches the world with gentle sincerity and an unwavering devotion to his beloved security blanket.

And when it comes to that blanket, Linus knows one thing for certain — happiness is having it close at hand!

MEET SNOOPY!
Life is never ordinary when you’re Snoopy!

Charlie Brown’s wildly imaginative beagle may spend their days perched atop their doghouse, but in their mind they're soaring through the skies as the daring World War I Flying Ace, battling the Red Baron — or simply dreaming about their next supper!
Confident, theatrical and always ready to steal the spotlight, Snoopy proves that with a little imagination, even a dog’s life can be one grand adventure.
And when suppertime rolls around… stand back!
