Do you know what Arc-Fault Protection is? It is a very important safety measure introduced into the electrical industry. AFCI protected devices detect arcing faults and make sure any damaged wires and/or loose connections are cleared from the circuit or device protecting the circuit downstream, before the circuit can be energized.

AFCI protection is now found in almost all homes in all living spaces with a few minor exceptions. A few exceptions are but not limited to:

Kitchen Fridge Receptacle

Kitchen Counter / Island Receptacles

Bathroom Receptacle 1 M from Sink

One Dedicated Sump Pump Receptacle

There are more requirements for how AFCI protection needs to be installed to properly work in different instances. New 15A or 20A receptacles installed would need either AFCI protection at the breaker or the first device in the circuit with a 15A AFCI combination type outlet. This must be fed with Ridgid Steel/PVC Conduit, EMT/ENT, or Armored Cable (AC90/BX). These are two of the only accepted methods for installing AFCI protection for new receptacles required to be protected. When adding a receptacle to an existing circuit without AFCI protection installed, you may install an AFCI combination type outlet at the first newly added device with no means of metal raceway needed. This is enforced and accepted by an ESA bulletins along with the Ontario Electrical Code

Here are some articles from ESA to follow some more AFCI protection rules: Ep003-AFCI-GFCI with Trevor Tremblay - Transcript - Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) (https://lnkd.in/gHavUFgE)

Do you heat any spaces with space heaters? With the winter approaching, it is always a good reminder to quickly check over safety checks before starting up those space heaters!

Always remember to:
1. Check for approved safety listing
2. Make sure the heater is clean and free of debris
3. Cords are in good condition (no cuts, tape or abrasions)
4. Check the circuit you plugging into. Do not overload a circuit!
5. Be sure to follow all manufactures recommendations when using these units.
