🚫💧 Why Roof Details Matter.

These photos show moisture‑related deterioration that has developed at the roof edge over time. This kind of damage is often only noticed when maintenance or a closer inspection is done and the shingle edge or metal flashing is lifted.

A common issue is when simple components or proper fasteners are omitted during installation:

Drip edge flashing: An L‑shaped metal flashing that helps direct water into the gutters, reduces water contacting the roof deck and fascia, and limits water running behind the gutter system.

Fasteners on metal cap flashing: Using roof‑shank nails or generic screws in exposed locations can allow water to track in around the fastener holes. For exposed metal cap or edge flashings, fasteners with gaskets (or compatible screws designed for exterior metal, with sealing washers) are typically recommended so the pe*******on is sealed and movement is accommodated.

Without those details done correctly, water can:

Track back under shingles or metal at the eaves and edges

Stay in contact with the wood at the perimeter for long periods

Gradually break down the roof deck, fascia, and trim around those areas

💡 Why the lowest quote isn’t always best

When a quote is driven mainly by being the lowest number, the focus often shifts to speed: how quickly the crew can get on and off the roof. That can lead to skipping small steps like drip edge, proper flashing terminations, and gasketed fasteners on exposed metal. Those details don’t add much time or material cost, but they have a significant impact on how the roof performs over the long term.

✅ How homeowners can protect their investment

Ask if drip edge is included on all eaves and rakes, and how the metal is fastened and sealed.

Request a written scope that lists underlayment type, flashing details, and any deck or fascia repair allowances.

Give serious consideration to the roofer who provides the most photos, explanations, and detail in their proposal — that level of attention usually shows up in the finished roof. 🔍🏠

🌲 Cedar Roof 101: When Is It Time To Replace?

If you’re seeing leaks inside, your cedar roof is already past the point where simple repairs can help, the underlayment and even roof deck may be compromised, driving costs up significantly. 🚫💧

From the ground, you can spot early warning signs on a cedar roof like this:

🔍 Heavy cupping and curling – shakes are warped and no longer lying flat, which opens pathways for water.

⚡ Split or cracked shakes – visible gaps, missing corners, or “V” splits you can see from the yard.

🌫️ Soft, fuzzy, or heavily weathered wood – the shakes look stringy or “hairy,” showing the surface fibers are breaking down.

🌿 Persistent moss, algae, or dark staining – especially in the butt joints and lower edges where water sits the longest.

🧩 Uneven surface and loose shakes – rows look wavy instead of flat, or you can see lifted pieces and shadow lines where shakes have shifted.

✅ The best time to replace a cedar roof is before leaks show up inside your home. Getting ahead of the failure curve protects your sheathing, insulation, drywall, and finishes and usually keeps the overall project cost lower than waiting for major water damage.

If your roof looks anything like this from the ground, it’s a good idea to book a professional inspection and plan a replacement before the next big storm hits. ⛈️

Is your asphalt shingle roof trying to tell you something? 👀

Here are 5 easy things you can spot from the ground:

1️⃣ Missing shingles
Bare patches, exposed black underlay, or shingle pieces on the lawn or in the gutters after a windstorm.

2️⃣ Curling or lifting edges
Shingles should lie flat. If the corners are curling up or look wavy, the asphalt is drying out and losing its grip.

3️⃣ Heavy moss and green clumps
Thick moss between shingles or around skylights holds moisture and speeds up shingle and plywood rot in our wet climate. 🌧️

4️⃣ Bald spots / lost granules
Asphalt shingles should look sandy. If they look smooth or “bald,” or you see lots of granules in the gutters, they’re wearing out.

5️⃣ Sagging or uneven lines
Ridges and roof planes should look straight. Any dips, sags, or “soft‑looking” areas can mean damaged sheathing under the shingles.

⛽ Why waiting costs more now
Asphalt shingles are made from oil‑based products, and climbing oil prices are already pushing shingle prices up.

So the money saved by postponing a failing roof today can disappear fast when you add:
• Higher material prices later
• Extra costs to replace rotten roof decking and hidden water damage

If you’re spotting a few of these signs from the ground, that’s your cue to book an inspection before “later” becomes a lot more expensive. 💸

Your roof is talking to you long before it leaks, most people just don’t know what to look for. 🏠💬

Let’s be honest: replacing a roof isn’t as exciting as a new kitchen or bathroom. There’s no fancy backsplash at the end of it. But if you wait until the very last minute, you can easily add thousands of dollars in rotten wood, damaged framing, and interior repairs on top of an already costly project. 💸😬

Here’s a super simple 5‑point checklist you can do from the ground with just your eyes 👀:

1️⃣ Curled or lifted shingle edges
If you see shingles cupping, curling, or lifting at the corners, the roof is nearing the end of its life and is much more vulnerable to wind and rain. 🌧️

2️⃣ Bald spots or heavy granule loss
Look for smooth “bald” patches or darker areas where the texture is gone. Those tiny granules protect the shingle from UV and water – when they’re gone, the clock is ticking. ⏰

3️⃣ Cracked, broken, or missing shingles
Any obvious cracks, broken tabs, or missing shingles are red flags. Even a few missing pieces can let water in and start damaging the wood underneath. 🚩

4️⃣ Wavy, sagging, or uneven roof lines
If the roof surface looks wavy or you notice dips from the street, that can mean problems with the decking below – often from long‑term moisture. That’s when costs start to climb. 📈

5️⃣ Stained streaks or moss growth
Black streaks, heavy moss, or algae growth can trap moisture and speed up deterioration. If it’s widespread, it often means the shingles are aging out. 🌱🧱

If you’re seeing one or more of these from the ground, it’s probably time to book a professional roof inspection before small issues become big, expensive problems.
