Walnut stem wedge-over.

Destined for the sawmill, this triple stem black walnut had a primary union with included bark that was filled with foul-smelling moisture and soil. We dismantled it for our customer with the intention of retaining its high value trunk wood for lumber.

Slow and steady for this beastly boxelder takedown. We pulled out all the stops during this controlled fell to ensure we fully protected our customer’s tile bed and septic, located directly below the action. We relied on equipment by & (and a large, healthy elm tree) to handle the serious static loads and get the job done safely. This was the final tree in a four-tree removal project that all required climbing and rigging due to their locations near fences, overhead lines, structures, septic, and propane.

Calculated and controlled. We were recently contracted to remove this big silver maple that was growing uncomfortably close to our customer’s residence. After a decent amount of climbing and rigging prep work, we felled the back-weighted tree into a narrow drop zone by using a redirected line off a floating block to the ever-helpful GRCS winch.

Felling this sketchy dead ash with substantial decay along the hinge meant being prepared to retreat quickly from the stump zone. Thankfully, it was being dropped into a big open area which meant its precise direction of fall wasn’t critical.

Using the tongue and groove felling method on this dead elm. Important skill or just a party trick? While not a technique to use when cutting valuable timber, it can have its uses when needing to prevent log roll in confined drop zones - and it looks cool, too!
