THE CHALLENGES OF LAKEFRONT REBUILDS & RENOVATIONS. There are many old cabins around the shores of the Shuswap Lake that were built 50 to 70 years ago. The lots these rustic recreational homes are built on are often stunning, with gorgeous views and water access. But many of these structures are reaching the end of their serviceable life or are in desperate need of a major update. The challenge is that many of these homes were built close to the shore and would never be allowed to be re-built in their current locations due to modern regulations. Understanding what is and isn’t allowed is a minefield and that has led many homeowners down a dead end for development. Here at Copper Island Fine Homes, we can confidently say that no other contractor has rebuilt or renovated more older Shuswap lakefront homes. FROM OUR CREW TO YOURS...
This past week, we’ve had our entire crew — and a ton of our trusted sub-trades — burning the midnight oil, putting the final touches on our huge whole house renovation in Eagle Bay in time for the owners to enjoy Christmas in their completely revamped home.

On Tuesday, we took a little time out on the project to host a lunch there for our team of employees and sub-trades. We BBQ’d some smokies and had cookies, cakes and other Christmas treats, and just took a minute to appreciate our trades and staff, along with what we have accomplished on this extensive reno. This project will have a spectacular end result and we are very excited to reveal it soon!

In the meantime, we had a photo taken of our staff who attended, to wish every one of our clients, suppliers and trusted trades a merry Christmas!

CANADA FIRST! As with all home builders in Canada, the unfolding of the tariffs controversy this past weekend has been deeply concerning to us here at Copper Island Fine Homes. However, we're pleased to say that we haven’t found anything that current or potential clients should be alarmed about. For years, we’ve been committed to buying and using materials that are made in Canada at a minimum, and ideally, here in BC. Nevertheless, we’ll be stepping up our efforts to mitigate any risks to our clients by proactively working closely with our suppliers to identify supply chain scenarios where tariffs may apply, and also work with them to source alternate Canadian-made products where possible. Where risk of price escalation exists for products that aren’t available from Canadian sources, we’ll consider early ordering if it results in cost savings. And we’ll also be stepping up our efforts to pass along clear information to clients to allow them to make informed decisions about where products come from. At the end of the day, I’ve come to see the threat of a trade war as a challenge and an opportunity to source and promote domestic products, and to seek to buy as locally as possible. Beyond the obvious cost savings benefits of avoiding using products with prices inflated by tariffs, buying local will also further reduce our carbon footprint due to reduced transportation needs, as well as support the provinces and country that are home for us. Canada first!

Every once in a while, we get to sink our teeth into a truly exceptional new build that challenges our skills and creativity – and offers an incredibly rewarding sense of satisfaction when we get to the finish line. This was certainly the case for our recently completed project on the North Shore. Our clients have agreed to allow us to enter their new home in the Keystone Awards, the yearly competition held by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (Kamloops Division). COOL CARRIAGE HOUSE: Throughout BC, there’s a great deal of interest in carriage houses, garden suites and other secondary dwelling units, thanks to an easing of regulations by all levels of government — provincial, municipal, and regional — as one solution to a lack of housing. We’ve been building these types of units for years, and we’re proud to say that nobody has built more of them in our area. Below is a quick look at an excellent example that we’re currently bringing to completion in Scotch Creek. As you can, the lower floor is a huge 30 by 40 foot garage/storage area, while the second floor is a roughly 1,000 square foot suite.
