📢 Chamber Update – PST Expansion to Professional Services

Starting October 1, 2026, BC will expand PST to include a range of professional services that many businesses rely on daily.

Because PST is non-refundable, this introduces a direct 7% cost that may disproportionately impact businesses in Northern BC, where operating costs, transportation, and access to services are already higher.

Chambers of Commerce across Northern BC, alongside partners throughout the province, are advocating for the government to reconsider this approach and better reflect the realities of rural and resource-based economies.

🎿 10 Years Ago, Smithers Hosted Olympians.

In March 2016, with just six days’ notice, the Smithers Ski & Snowboard Club stepped up to host the SportChek Canadian Ski Cross Championships after the original venue lost snow.

A true “dream team” organizing committee came together and met the challenge.

No excuses. No drama. Just a community that knows how to deliver.

And deliver we did.

That week on Hudson Bay Mountain featured six Olympic ski cross athletes:

🏅 Kelsey Serwa – Olympic Gold & Silver Medallist
🏅 Marielle Thompson – Olympic Gold Medallist
🏅 Brady Leman – Olympic Gold Medallist
🏅 Chris Del Bosco – 2× Olympian
🏅 Reece Howden – Olympian
🏅 Kevin Drury – Olympian

Six Olympians. In Smithers. With six days’ notice.

The event ran flawlessly — so much so that the organizing committee was awarded Race Organizing Committee of the Year by Alpine Canada Ski Cross.

We’re proud that BV Electric Ltd. sponsored the event, and that our President, Gary Huxtable as well as Buisness Development Manager, Phil Bernier, were the lead organizers who helped make it happen.

Small town.
World-class athletes.
National championship.
Olympic calibre field.
