Way to go Wesley Keating! Our Training Manager recently represented Hy-Tech at the Society of Economic Geologists’ Drilling 101 training.

The session was a true cross-industry effort, initiated by Jennifer La Sure of Freeport and supported by Hy-Tech, Boart Longyear, Layne Drilling, and Major Drilling. Together, the group helped give geologists a practical look at drilling from the contractor’s perspective.

Wes covered the fundamentals of specialty drilling, including fly drilling and ice drilling, sharing practical knowledge that can help geologists and drill crews work more effectively together when planning and executing these specialized programs.

If you know Wes, you know he’s in his element in front of a room. He has a knack for taking complex topics and making them practical, clear and easy to understand.

In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad arrived at residential school wearing a new orange shirt her grandmother had bought for her. On her first day, it was taken away.

Her story inspired Orange Shirt Day and the message Every Child Matters.
September 30 is also the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, and their families and communities.

Some days, the jobsite feels pretty quiet. A calm lake, a clear sky and, somewhere in the distance, a helicopter making its way across the horizon. But working in remote environments means there’s always a lot happening behind the scenes.

From transportation and communications to equipment, logistics and daily planning, being prepared is what keeps the work moving safely and reliably: even when the nearest support might be a long way away.

Another shift comes to a close at Pogo, with an Alaskan sunset providing the backdrop.

Located in the Tintina Gold Province southeast of Fairbanks, Pogo is a long-standing underground gold operation that has produced more than 5.5 million ounces of gold since production began in 2006. Exploration continues to support the operation’s future, with drilling focused on extending known mineralization and identifying new opportunities.

For our crews, it means doing precise, dependable work in one of the world’s most remarkable mining regions, usually with a pretty good view at the end of the day.

Every site is unique, and sometimes even the road to the drill tells part of the story.

At Wheeler River in northern Saskatchewan, where we operate as Rivers Drilling, access can mean navigating rocky terrain, mud and plenty of sand. In softer sections, our team installs wooden mats to create a more stable path and keep crews and equipment moving safely.

The ride is pretty unique, too. Our underground Toyota has been upgraded with bigger tires and extra clearance to handle the conditions. In the back, box lids are ready for the next load of core.

Adapting to the conditions and preparing for what’s ahead: it’s all part of a Wheeler kind of commute.
