Mountain Ash trees are beautiful, but as they mature, they can become more vulnerable to decline.🌳

Drought stress, harsh Alberta winters, insects, disease and internal decay can all contribute to dieback over time. Once large portions of the canopy are dead and rot has developed, the tree can become structurally unsafe.

This mature Mountain Ash had lost more than half of its canopy and removal was the safest option.

This season has been especially tough on mature spruce trees.

We’ve responded to more storm-damaged and fallen spruce trees than we’ve seen in a long time. Spruce trees naturally have relatively shallow, spreading root systems rather than deep taproots. When the soil becomes saturated after heavy rain, those roots can lose some of their holding strength and strong winds can be enough to uproot an entire mature tree.

This one came down directly onto the house roof. Using our bucket truck, we carefully dismantled and removed it piece by piece, leaving the property clean and avoiding any further damage.

If you have a large spruce near your home that’s leaning, showing exposed or lifted roots, or has recently shifted after a storm, it’s worth having it assessed.🤔

Two backyard spruces down!

Sometimes tree removal isn’t about disease or damage, sometimes homeowners simply have different plans for their outdoor space.

Storm damage doesn’t always mean the whole tree has to go.

This 40–50 year-old poplar had four co-dominant stems. After one failed onto the fence and two others were left leaning toward the shed, we removed the three compromised stems and kept the one that was still stable.

Mature multi-stem trees can become more vulnerable to splitting as they age, especially during Alberta’s strong winds and storms.

If you have a large tree with multiple stems, it’s worth having it assessed before the next storm decides for you. 🌬️

Regular pruning isn’t just about making a tree look better. 🌳✂️

As trees mature, proper pruning helps manage their size, remove problematic growth, improve clearance from buildings and utility lines, and reduce the risk of branch failure.

This mature Siberian crabapple got a crown reduction and raise, giving it more space while keeping the tree healthy and manageable.

Manitoba maples are fast growers, but they’re not built to last forever. 🌳

As they age, weak co-dominant stems, decay and fungal issues can make them much more vulnerable to strong winds and storms.

This mature maple lost one of its main stems during a recent storm, and with signs of fungus and decline, removal was the safest option.

60 feet of spruce coming down. 🌲

This one was on a demolition property, so we had a little more room to work, but with power lines close by, it still had to be climbed and removed carefully.

A little less stress about the surroundings… but we still left everything standing exactly as we found it. 😎

Manitoba maples are fast-growing trees, but their weak wood and heavy, spreading limbs make them especially prone to breaking during strong winds and storms. 🌳💨

We’ve seen plenty of storm damage lately: split stems, broken limbs and entire sections coming down.
