How are you enjoying the mid-winter warm up? โ˜€๏ธ

Just a reminder to make sure your downpipe extensions are down so the melting snow & ice drains onto your lawn and not your foundation.

These beautiful temperatures won't last long ๐ŸŒก๏ธ. Some maintenance now can make things easier after the next freeze ๐ŸงŠ and when real spring rolls around.

Below are some tasks that are perfect to get done in the warm weather:
- Clear any lingering snow or ice build up from your roof edges & vents โ„๏ธ๐ŸงŠ
- Clear snow & ice from your eavestroughs ๐ŸงŠโ„๏ธ
- Ensure your downpipe ends & tip-ups are not buried in snow or encased in ice ๐Ÿช

On the majority of the Roof Replacement quotations we provide customers, there is an upgrade option for Duraflo Turbo Vents. Many people ask if they really need this upgraded vent. In short, no, it's not a necessity, ๐๐”๐“ it can certainly help you and your roofing system in the winter.

The Turbo Vents sit much taller than a standard attic vent . While some may not like the look of a bigger and taller vent, when there is an abundance of snow piled on your roof they really come in handy as they sit above the snow โ„. Meanwhile, many of the roofs with standard attic vents have the vents covered in snow, choking off and reducing their airflow. Unless you are getting up there and removing the snow off your vents, this can cause condensation issues inside your attic space as the humidity inside is not able ventilate outside efficiently. ๐Ÿƒ

Other perks for Duraflo Turbo Vents are that they come in the same colour options as standard attic vents to closely match your new shingles ๐ŸŽจ, and the higher ventilation capacity means less vents required to meet the recommended standards for your attic space.

It's that time of year again! With the ๐Ÿ”…warmer winter temperatures โ™จ๏ธ, you may see water spots๐Ÿ’ง on your ceiling, around your attic hatch, or in your attic space.... this is commonly caused by ๐˜ผ๐™๐™๐™„๐˜พ ๐™๐˜ผ๐™„๐™‰.

Humidity. If the humidity has been set too high in the home, it can cause too much humidity in the attic space. Poorly sealed bathroom vent piping and attic hatches can leak humidity into the attic space. If there are seals broken or leaks in the vapour barriers between your living space and the attic space, humidity can leak through. All this humidity can freeze on the underside of your roof sheeting. When you get above zero temperatures like today, the ice melts and "rains" back down onto your insulation and your ceilings.

๐™’๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™„ ๐˜ฟ๐™ค?
- Do NOT set your humidity high or run a humidifier for long periods of time. During extreme cold snaps (-25C or lower) set your humidity very low or off if possible. โฌ‡
- Run your bathroom fan before, during, and after you shower or bath to move the humidity out of your home. ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿšฟ
- Run the kitchen range when cooking to move the humidity out of the home. ๐Ÿฅ˜
- Ensure your vapour barriers are intact and sealed properly. โ˜‚๏ธ
- Clear the snow off your roof regularly and ensure your vents are not covered. When the vents are covered this can choke off the ventilation and less air can move through the vents. ๐ŸŒจโ„
- Check with a local professional to ensure you have adequate ventilation for your roof & attic space. ๐Ÿƒ

Even if there are no signs of attic rain, it's a good idea to take a peak into your attic space to check things out every now and then, especially during the extreme cold temperatures (-25 or below). If you see frost on the underside of the roof, you will be able to tell there is too much humidity and the condensation froze to the roof sheeting.

If you are having issues with attic rain, depending on the amount of suspected damage, we would recommend reaching out to your insurance company or an inspector.

Is your roof covered in heavy snow? โ„๏ธ Be cautious of ice damming ๐ŸงŠ

With warmer winter days, the bottom layer of snow that sits against your roof/ shingles heats up and melts. As the water runs down the roof underneath the snow and gets to the eaves edge where the roof is colder and overnight, the melted snow then freezes again and forms an ice dam below the built up snow. As the cycle repeats the ice builds up more and more.

This ice is very strong and can wreak havoc on your shingles and eavestroughs. The ice may creep up underneath your shingles and flashings, separating them, damaging them, and allowing water underneath them. Heavy snow combined with ice can cause your eavestroughs to pull away from your roof's eaves edge from the weight and the force of the ice, allowing water to drip between the roof and eavestrough.

To mitigate ice damming and it's costly aftermath, be sure to clear snow from your roof as best you can. At minimum from your eaves edges. Ensure your roof has adequate ventilation, both from soffits and the roof top. It is also important to have sufficient levels of insulation to prevent internal heat loss into the attic space from your home. Don't forget to uncover your vents while clearing the snow!

Water spots on your ceiling with the warming weather? Attic Rain may be the culprit.

๐™’๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ž๐™จ ๐˜ผ๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ?
Attic Rain is caused when humidity and condensation freezes in your attic space during the cold weather, and then melts when the temperatures warm up. The melting frost converts back to moisture then "rains" inside your attic space and into your home.

To minimalize attic rain:
- Keep your roof vents clear of snow during the winter so that the air and moisture can escape your attic space
- Check to see if you have adequate ventilation on your roof & soffits
- Ensure your exhaust vents duct work and connections are properly sealed inside the attic space
- Keep the humidity in your home low or turn it off when it drops to extreme cold temperatures
- Run your kitchen fans during and after using them & bathroom fans before, during, and after your shower/ bath to ensure the moisture is getting cleared from the pipe and not freezing up the exhaust vent on the roof.
- Proper insulation levels are a must to keep the heat inside your home, as much as it is to keep the cold out!
- Check your attic hatch and other ceiling protrusions to ensure they are sealed well and minimal warm air is escaping from your home into the attic space.

When the temperatures rise from -30ยฐC to +5ยฐC in 24 hrs, and vice versa, it creates the perfect conditions for attic rain. Sometimes you can not avoid it completely, but you can help mitigate it!
