Love how this project is coming along! 😍

Since the project involved a small hallway and a couple small spaces coming off the garage entry, there wasn't much room for a traditional mud room; so, incorporating space-saving custom storage and reconfiguring a few areas was a MUST!

The Solution:

🌟 A secondary hallway closet is converted to a beautiful drop-zone with a bank of drawers that doubles for storing seasonal items such as hats, mitts, etc. Easy to grab and go on the way out the door and keeps the area clean and tidy!

🌟 An under-utilized upper laundry cabinet is swapped with a rod and shelf so laundry can still be hung neatly as it's dried and awaiting its return to its proper place.

🌟 A custom L-shaped bench and open shelving shoe storage unit is installed in place of the original rod and shelf in the laundry. Here, we took advantage of the vertical space and created a convenient staging area for removing or putting on shoes.

🌟 A large full-height cabinet is added in the powder room to house some of the items from the secondary hallway closet that is now home to the drop-zone mentioned earlier.

🌟 Of course, visual design was just as important as the functional part. So, beautiful materials in a variety of colors, textures and finishes have been incorporated in the update of this space!

Next up...Mood Boards. Otherwise called an Inspiration or "Inspo" Board.

A mood board is a brief snapshot of a space's intended look and features the finishes, colors, materials, fixtures, furniture, and accessories of a design.

A mood board helps to set the tone for a designer's intention when piecing all the elements of a room together. This way, clients can get a really good idea of how these materials, colors and finishes will look in the finished space together.

This is the part of the design process that I personally enjoy since it is put together at the start of a project and really initiates the overall mood of the space. Plus, it is like pulling all the pieces of a puzzle together, to creatively plan which pieces go together best and accomplish the overall look and feel I plan to achieve for my clients.

This mood board is the inspiration for a half bath renovation I'm working on. It's only the beginning, but I can't wait to share the before and after shots with you! Stay tuned...

Hey there! It's me, the face behind Zelda B Design Co. I thought I'd introduce myself to any new followers out there. Here's some "Fun" facts about me...

* I was born in Alaska and raised in Arizona, moved to Alberta when I married my love... Apparently, I only reside in places that start and end in 'A', eh!
* My first job was as a lifeguard/ swim instructor/ swim coach, and I'm super passionate about water safety.
* My favorite color is GREEN
* I've never been more than 6 months without a pet and currently have two senior Boston Terriers, Ellie and Fenway
* Until I had kids, the only movie that could make me cry was Titanic; now I shed tears for Disney movies (can we talk about Onward, where Ian gives up his opportunity to meet his dad and instead lets his big brother see him one last time 😭😭😭)
* Heading to the mountains is what grounds me. I can't even believe the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and am so fortunate it's literally in my backyard.
* Speaking of the mountains, I golf only once a year in Kananaskis. It is the one thing I look forward to year after year (besides fishing on the lake with my hubs). This past summer, I sunk a 20 ft putt on the 18th hole. It was the most amazing feeling ever! I should have listened to my Aunt Kit, an avid golfer, when she suggested I go after a golf scholarship when I was in University (maybe even high school). I only started in 2011 during a work function and am repeatedly told that I am quite good for only going once a year. It's my goal to start on a women's league because I enjoy it so much and would love to advance my skills and do it more often than once a year.
* I learned to tow, back-up and maintain a 33-foot travel trailer when I took on the role of entrepreneur in our trailer rental side hustle. It's taught me a LOT and given me tons of confidence when trying something new and otherwise intimidating.
* My design style would be summed up as Mid Century Modern with an eclectic mix. I love the simple lines, textures and colors of MCM, but I also love incorporating statement pieces that transcend various styles and eras.
* My dream vacation would be to travel the countries of my ancestral DNA.

Let's bring FUN to reno'ing!

Wait.....whaaaat?! Those two things DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go together. But what if they did? Okay, before you call me crazy, hear me out.

Often when you don't enjoy or know what you're doing, it's the least fun task to accomplish. Leaving you full of frustration and thoughts of things you'd rather be doing. Can you relate?

Now, what if you have someone in your corner who can do the heavy lifting for you so all you have to do is make a choice between a couple options that, either way, will end up amazing?

Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it doesn't have to be. When you hire an interior designer to help you plan a minor or major renovation, you're getting professional expertise to ensure the frustrating parts of a renovation are not only considered, but planned for.

These can include design considerations that avoid costly mistakes, identify ways to increase your homes value for your budget and timeline, provide access to trusted contractors, and save time in the process.

And if something does arise mid-reno (like the previous owner's shortcuts hidden deep within the walls of your home), you have someone who is in your corner and at-the-ready to problem-solve, providing you with viable options that have your goals in mind.

So, if the thought of planning a home renovation gives you nightmares, it's time to consider hiring an interior designer. At Zelda B Design Co. we are committed to providing our creative services with respect, integrity and professionalism.

We look forward to helping every client achieve a well-designed space that still feels like home. And we are here to make the process as fun and stress-free as possible!

Let's talk FIRST IMPRESSIONS.

Starting up a new business is exciting and nerve-wracking. Even with all the education, experience and confidence I have designing interiors, there comes a crazy amount of self-doubt and expectations to not only do well for myself but also for others, especially as it relates to creating a successful project.

I hope, more than anything, my clients love the designs I create; but, I also hope they enjoy the process. When it comes to creating a design, there is a lot of "hand-holding" through each phase of a project. With that comes an enormous amount of trust in the designer...me!

So, it's no surprise that a first impression is one of the most important aspects in the beginning phase of a project - where my clients learn about me and my values and what sets me apart from other designers. This is also where I intimately get to know my clients through a detailed questionnaire about their preferences, dislikes, project goals, etc.

In reviewing these things together, we start to form a team, and the project becomes very personal for me. My ultimate goal, of course, is to provide my clients with a design they love. But I also want them to feel comfortable and confident in choosing me as their designer.

Just as you would feel about a place upon its first impression, like the difference in curb appeal of this home's BEFORE & AFTER, an interior designer is no different. That is why I offer a design consultation as part of my services. It gives my clients an opportunity to see if I am the right fit for their project and for their team.

If you're seeking the expertise of an interior designer for your next project, I would be happy to set up a design consultation so we can get to know one another and discuss what you're looking to achieve. And if you're looking to upgrade your home's first impression, I specialize in that too. πŸ˜‰

Colorful. Is how I envisioned my boys' room. Full of rich color, contrast and light. I enjoyed mixing neutrals with pops of blue, blue-green, green and orange. And anchoring the space with wood textures to add warmth and a rustic charm.

Color doesn't have to be scary or bold. But creating a space that uses color to feel calm or playful...that's my jam. If you're looking to change your space, reach out and let's discuss your needs. I'll bring the vision to suit your goals.

Part of a well-designed home means creating spaces that are functional and better organized for your life and lifestyle. When you don't have an abundance of space but require a multi-purpose solution, the design process often includes some creative problem-solving.

To create a functional command center for this family (my own πŸ˜‰), we took advantage of the vertical space of this wall, which is located between the garage and front entry yet is visible from the main hub (the kitchen) of the home. Now the family can keep track of their busy schedule with the custom framed calendar, corral back-packs and coats on the five permanent hooks that were installed with accessability for the kids in mind and the metal wall-hanging baskets are perfect for keeping library books, magazines and homework organized and in sight.

This design not only reduces clutter around the home, it gives each family member a functional system to keep organized...and with three young kids, that is essential!

If you're looking to add some organization to the design of your home, reach out to Zelda B Design Co. to see how we can help you achieve those New Years organizational goals!

There's something about a home that smells of baking, spices and comfort food at Christmastime. Over the Holidays I put together these fresh potpourri packets and gifted them to neighbors, friends, our housecleaners and my children's teachers. Incredibly economical and easy to make, these are always well-received and I thoroughly enjoy gifting them.

To make:
🍊 1-2 dried orange slices *I slice and dry my own: 1/8" navel slices, baked on parchment @ 175 for 6-8 hours, flip halfway through baking*
🌿 1 sprig of fresh rosemary
πŸ’ 1/2 C fresh cranberries
πŸ§‚1 stick cinnamon
πŸ§‚ 1 T whole cloves

Assemble together and add a special note with instructions for simmering on the stovetop. Enjoy gifting or for yourself!
