🌸 Hydrangeas! 🌸

Those big, fluffy blooms you see everywhere come in beautiful shades of green, white and pink. 🤍💚🩷

Did you know when and how you prune your hydrangea depends on the variety? Some bloom on old wood, while others bloom on new growth, so pruning at the wrong time can mean sacrificing next year’s flowers.

For the hydrangeas we prune in the fall, we’re primarily looking at cleaning up, removing weak or damaged stems, and managing the plant’s structure. Those large flower heads and long stems can also catch snow and ice, adding weight and increasing the risk of breakage over winter.

So exciting — we placed at the Shawville Fair!

We’re thrilled to have taken 2nd prize for our mixed sunflower bouquet 🌻 and 4th prize for our Rainbow Jazz heirloom tomatoes! 🍅🏆

The competition was strong in the zucchini category 🥒 — we’ll have to bring our A-game next year! 😉💪

So proud of our garden and grateful to be part of such a wonderful local fair. Congratulations to all the growers and gardeners who entered! 🌱🌻🍅

It’s that time of year when things in the garden can start looking a little sad. 🌿

A quick pick-me-up can make a big difference! We’re cleaning up these Hostas by pruning off their spent flower stems. Hostas, lilies, irises and many other perennials can benefit from this simple late-season tidy-up.

At this point in the season, growth is slowing down, so we want the plant’s energy going toward the roots and preparing for next year rather than maintaining spent flower stems.

That said, not everything needs to be cut back! 🌻 Some plants, like Echinacea, are great to leave standing through the fall and winter. Their seed heads provide food for birds and add some winter interest to the garden. 🐦

It’s all about knowing what to clean up and what to leave behind. A little garden maintenance can go a long way! 🌱🍂

💐 A little flower love from the garden! 🌻

We had the pleasure of putting together some beautiful bouquets today for the St. John’s Lutheran Church service and supper tomorrow! 💕 We love getting to share a little piece of our garden with the community.

🌻 Our sunflowers are just starting to bloom, and we’re so excited for what’s to come! We’ll have plenty ready for next weekend’s pop-up Farmers Market at the municipal hall in Ladysmith.
