H**p Seed Waste Could Become a Valuable Biomedical Material

A new 2026 study found that waste left after pressing h**p seeds for oil contains useful natural compounds with strong antioxidant activity.
Researchers used a relatively simple hot-water extraction process to produce a biopolymer-rich material containing:
• ~52% carbohydrates
• ~29% proteins
• ~1% phenolic compounds
• Starch was the main identified polysaccharide
🧪 What did it do?
The h**p extract helped neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), unstable molecules that can damage cells and break down biological materials.
At 1 mg/mL, its antioxidant activity in fibroblast cells was not significantly different from vitamin C and quercetin controls under the study conditions.
The extract also increased the cell-viability signal by about 2× after 24 hours at the highest concentration tested.
🦴 The most interesting finding involved hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is used in joint injections for osteoarthritis. In inflamed joints, ROS can damage HA and reduce its ability to provide lubrication and cushioning.
When researchers exposed HA to oxidative stress:
HA alone → substantial degradation
HA + h**p extract → less degradation and better preservation of its physical properties
This raises the possibility of using h**p-seed waste as an antioxidant ingredient in future biomedical materials, including HA-based joint treatments.
♻️ Instead of throwing h**p waste away:
H**p seeds → oil → leftover biomass → antioxidant biopolymer → potential biomedical material
This is still laboratory research, not evidence that the extract treats osteoarthritis in people. But it demonstrates another potentially valuable use of h**p far beyond THC and C*D.
