September is the perfect time to tackle a few of those home maintenance jobs before Saskatchewan’s colder weather arrives.
A little preventative maintenance now can help keep your home comfortable, catch small problems early, and hopefully prevent an unexpected repair on a -30°C day. ❄️
Here are a few things worth checking:
✔️ Change your furnace filter — A clean filter helps with airflow and allows your furnace to work more efficiently.
✔️ Check your thermostat — Turn the heat on before you actually need it and make sure everything is working properly.
✔️ Check vents and returns — Make sure they aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs or other items.
✔️ Take a look at your hot water tank — Watch for moisture, rust, unusual noises or changes in your hot water.
✔️ Inspect your plumbing — Check under sinks, around toilets and near exposed pipes for signs of leaks.
✔️ Clean around your A/C unit — Clear away leaves, grass and debris before winter arrives.
✔️ Check outdoor areas — Don’t forget outdoor taps, downspouts and drainage areas as you prepare your home for freezing temperatures.
✔️ Consider a professional service check — Especially if your furnace gave you any trouble last winter.
You don’t have to do everything in one day. Save this checklist and work through it over the next few weekends.
And if you come across something that doesn’t look or sound quite right, give Excelsior Mechanical a call. We’d much rather help you deal with it in September than during the first Saskatchewan cold snap. 😉
