That rumbling sound coming from your water heater? It's heating water through a layer of hardened sediment stuck to the bottom of the tank.
Over time, minerals in your water settle and harden inside the tank. Your system has to work through that buildup every time it fires up, which is what creates those popping or banging sounds. It's also why your hot water might not last as long as it used to.
