We started Haven Builders because of our own personal experience of building homes with other builders. We developed a company to address the things we did not like about that process. The perfect fall day at the lake doesn’t exi……….JUST KIDDING this is it. Tea in the morning crisp air, a misty {and chilly} sunrise paddle, a walk in the golden forest, curling up on the literal prettiest benchseat with a good book, and a dockside picnic. It just doesn’t get better than this. All in the somewhat magical quiet that is the lake, in Autumn.

Fun facts from this video:
• There was literal frost on the paddle, the water was frigid, and the whole time I was picturing how not great it would be if I fell in
• I realized AFTER sipping my picnic w**e that I didn’t wash the Value Village picnic basket glasses….and I’m pretty sure there was a dead bug in it
• The boreal forest in autumn is a kind of serenity that few are privileged to know

Soon as I get home, this is what I wanna see.

Just because you’re at the lake, doesn’t mean the entry can’t be pretty.

What it actually means is it needs to be SUPER functional, hardworking, durable, and provide ample storage for ALL the different clothing attire. This entry boasts a large mudroom with laundry, the prettiest powder you ever did see, and a large space for the welcoming committee and the teary goodbyes.

We’re doing a full send on *all* things Belgian Beauty, and it starts now. There is an unspeakable level of peace and calm at the lake in autumn. The boats are silenced, the campers gone home, just the sound of the wind whispering through the pines and the geese gathering to journey home. It’s a different kind of special, and we want to share it with you.

You don’t always have to start from scratch. In fact, some of our favorite projects are the ones that begin with existing windows, walls and footprints. It’s a special kind of design adventure embracing the existing architecture and creating ways to truly make it shine.

We didn’t touch a single exterior element in this project. But we sure took a hammer to the interior walls…💪🏻🔨

Introducing….’Home Again’ a project all about creating a home designed to complement the lifestyle of those living in it.

THE BEFORE + AFTER

Normally I would wait to do this until our professional photos came back, but y’all are chomping at the bit to see, so here it is, in all its raw iPhone glory.

As you can see, the original kitchen was cramped, disjointed, and well just too choppy. So out came the tape measures, sketch pads and inspiration file…..and 4.5 months later here we are.

The finished product has all the elements of a good kitchen: endless drawer storage, ample counter space, excellent lighting [both task and ambient…just in time for lamp o’clock season], sleek panelled appliances and an earthy color palette. Oh and ofcourse there’s a large Butler’s with smart pantry storage and the ultimate counter for ALL the coffee and smoothie accessories.

Our original backsplash selection got discontinued, and I gotta say sometimes these things happen for a reason because is that tile not the PERFECT color match to the decorative hood.

THEY’RE HOME 🤎

This one started with a fridge waterline leak. It ended with a completely transformed main floor, and exclamations of “wow; it looks so put together” and happy tears {my actual favorite thing ever}

Another fun fact, these clients came as a referral from our Artisan Organic project. Y’all know the best business is referral business. So whoever goes over for dinner to see this beauty, just remember……YOU could be next!!

The home was extremely well built. For the first time in a long list of remodels, we didn’t touch the exterior. At all. This posed a unique design challenge of integrating all the existing windows into the new spaces. The result: a cozy, warm, family home spacious enough for hosting [that dining table extends!] yet cozy enough for family nights. And shall we talk about retreating to the library after a long day, shutting the French doors [cleverly incorporated from the original home as requested by the client], putting on a record, and getting buried in your latest read.

The remodel journey can be tricky. You have to move out, your daily routine is interrupted, it feels like the demo and drywall phase are unending, and then ofcourse you wonder if we are ACTUALLY going to finish.

I can promise you one thing: when you make it to Possession Day and ring that doorbell and we welcome you home, alllllll that fades to the background. You will probably experience a combination of shock, awe, and speechless happiness. And it will ALL be worth it.

I was stuck on this ensuite tile. It was the perfect palette to recreate the luxurious suites found within every Roomers location. It was bold; mixing herringbone, rectangular bricklayer, square and then adding in a mirrored hex floor to ceiling. But I knew it was what the room needed.

Then ofcourse I get the phone call that stock is depleted, they’re discontinuing and we should strongly consider substituting.

This is why you hire an experienced team. I said no, we need to wait, because this was literally the foundation for the entire ensuite design. As experienced designers, we know when to pivot and find alternate solutions, but also when we need to stand our ground and defend the vision.

Were we grouting tile and installing shower trims 10 minutes before photoshoot? Yes.

Was it worth is? Yes.

And just like that this little guy is off to school. The sportiest room for a very athletic young man. Following in dad’s footsteps 🖤. Special thanks to The Indefinite Article who filled a box either these vintage treasures when I told them the story of this house [and gave me a VERY good deal]
