🥵 HEAT WARNINGS ISSUED ACROSS SOUTHERN ONTARIO
Well… here come the annual “It’s called summer 🤓” comments. Yes, it’s summer. That doesn’t make extreme heat any less dangerous.
Environment Canada has now issued Heat Warnings across much of Southern Ontario ahead of a prolonged heat event beginning Tuesday. Most warned areas are expected to see daytime highs of 31 to 34°C, with some locations reaching 37°C. Even more concerning, overnight lows will only fall to 21 to 25°C, offering very little relief from the heat.
These are also Orange Level Heat Warnings for most of Southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe, which is Environment Canada’s second-highest impact level. An Orange Level warning means a high-impact heat event is expected, with dangerous conditions that significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially during prolonged periods of hot days and very warm nights.
The hottest days are expected to be Wednesday and Thursday, and some warnings may continue into the weekend.
Here’s why we take this seriously:
Heat is one of the deadliest weather hazards on the planet. It doesn’t produce dramatic videos like tornadoes or hurricanes, but it quietly claims lives every single year.
Canada’s deadliest weather disaster wasn’t a tornado, flood or blizzard. It was the 2021 B.C. heat dome, which contributed to more than 600 deaths in just a matter of days. And right now, Europe is once again seeing the devastating impacts of extreme heat, with hundreds to more than a thousand excess deaths already being linked to the recent heatwave.
So while some people will inevitably say, “It’s just summer,” we’ll continue treating heat with the respect it deserves. We are a severe weather page, after all.
Please take care of yourself this week. Drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, never leave children or pets in a vehicle, and check in on elderly family members, neighbours, and anyone who may not have access to air conditioning, such as those experiencing homelessness.
And remember, not everyone has the luxury of sitting in a cool, air-conditioned basement all day complaining about heat warnings being unnecessary and red maps being too dramatic. For many people, this kind of heat is uncomfortable, dangerous, and in some cases, life-threatening.
