Is Your Water Heater’s “Sacrificial Lamb” Still Doing Its Job? 🛡️💧

Take a look at the image above: on the right is a brand-new anode rod, and on the left is one that has spent years silently protecting a water heater tank that we replaced last week!

Most homeowners don't know it exists, but the anode rod is the single most critical component standing between your water heater and a costly leak.

Why the Anode Rod Matters
It Sacrifices Itself for Your Tank: Anode rods are made of metals like magnesium or aluminum that attract corrosive elements in the water. They are designed to corrode so your steel tank doesn't.

Prevents Sudden Leaks & Flooding: Once the anode rod is fully worn down (like the one on the left), corrosive minerals attack the inner walls of your water heater tank, leading to rust holes and catastrophic leaks.

Saves You Thousands: Replacing an inexpensive anode rod every few years can double the lifespan of your water heater, saving you from having to replace the entire system prematurely.

Improves Water Quality: A failing rod or neglected tank can lead to rusty water or a unpleasant "rotten egg" hydrogen sulfide smell.

When Should You Have It Inspected?
Frequency: Have us inspect your anode rod every 2 to 3 years (or sooner if you have a water softener, as softened water speeds up corrosion).

Replacement Threshold: If more than 6 inches of the core wire is exposed or the rod is coated in heavy mineral crust, it’s time for a replacement.

A quick reminder for our community:

💨 Check and change your air filters frequently: Smoke particles clog furnace and heat pump filters much faster than normal dust. The photo below shows what just 2 weeks of smokey air does to a filter!

🔄 Keep indoor air recirculating: Set your system to recirculate air rather than pulling in outdoor air.

🛡️ Protect your HVAC equipment: A severely clogged filter restricts airflow, which can strain your system or cause it to shut down when you need it most.

Is your home hiding a ticking plumbing clock? 💧⚠️

Many homes built in Salmon Arm and across BC between the 1970s and late 1990s were fitted with Poly B (polybutylene) piping. At the time, it was the go-to budget material.

The trouble with Poly B is that it degrades quietly from the inside out due to water pressure, temperature fluctuations, and municipal water disinfectants. You usually won’t know there’s a problem until you’re suddenly dealing with a major leak or water damage.

Why replace it before it leaks?

Insurance risks: Many home insurance providers now refuse coverage or charge significantly higher premiums for homes with active Poly B plumbing.

Clean BC is reducing the rebates on all Income Levels for those converting from Oil, Propane or Natural Gas, Income Level 2 converting from Electricity will not qualify any longer.

If you have an Eligibility Code, obtain a quote by July 5th to be able to use it during the grace period! You will only have until July 31st to have the install completed.

A grace period has been developed for participants with existing eligibility codes who complete the installations between July 6 - 31, 2026. Upgrades must be installed and invoiced within the grace period to qualify for this exception and must also meet the specific requirements
