[Slide to the end for final restoration] In 2025 we completed the restoration of the ‘The Corner’ in downtown Thornbury. The project involved masonry cleaning, brick replacements, repointing, arch repairs, and the complete reconstruction of the decorative parapet.
Investigation of the parapet revealed not only brick deterioration and mortar loss on the front facing brick but also the complete failure of the cement parging on the back. In order to prevent water migration into the building as well as the potential hazards to pedestrians the parapet needed to be taken down and rebuilt.
It was very important to the client that the restoration kept the same historic brick detailing so meticulous notes and drawings were made before deconstruction took place.
Any brick in good condition was salvaged for use on other areas of repair and modern brick was chosen to match the size and colour.
Twenty courses and nearly 6,000 bricks were used to reconstruct the parapet, built three wythes (bricks) deep with brick arranged to tie itself together. By deconstructing the original parapet we had the privilege of getting a first hand look on how design and functionality come together to produce something that is both beautiful and strong.
Finally, the parapet was properly guarded with an aluminum flashing cap and backside, tying into the roof membrane.
Thank you to Project Home Collingwood for all their assistance with this restoration.
A big thank you to our client whose commitment to their historic building and the town of Thornbury has given this opportunity to revive one of the town’s most iconic buildings.
