WEST SIDE EDDIES- Mural 2026
Church Avenue side of AJ’s Restaurant at the Lancaster Plaza in West Saint John, NB
In late Spring 2026 I began working with a group of students from Barnhill Middle School on an outdoor mural – West Side Eddies. The mural had 2 sides – 12ft x 10 ft and 12ft x 12 ft with a 13ft x 3 ft bridge above a window, joining the sections together. The students worked with me creating the swirling waters we are all familiar with living near the Reversing Falls Bridge. When the Bay of Fundy waters attempting to flow upstream meet the great Wolastoq River (Saint John River) flowing towards the Atlantic Ocean they meet and dance together under the Reversing Falls Bridge. Each water source swirls and flows around the other creating small whirlpools called eddies. This commotion under the bridge is an invitation for Gulls and Cormorants to land in the eddies and have a relaxing twirl, a 360° view of the world without lifting a wing. I have seen gulls so composed and regal that they should raise a wing in Queenly wave. Or maybe they enjoy the frothing turns like the Tilt A Whirl ride I loved as a child. (Makes me sick now).
We used layers of semi-transparent colours, stamping and smoothing prints to gain the look of foamy movement. The students spent many sessions with me up until school ended. Thank you to all of you and the teachers for making it possible for the teens to come out to the site during school time. The student’s names can be seen on the lower right section of the mural.
The Gull and Cormorant were started by the students and then I continued on, working in layers on the Cormorant to give it a shifting sheen of dark shades. The upper sections of bright cloud-like shapes make the Gull and Cormorant pop out. Basically, I couldn’t do something that was completely realistic! Just had to have some fun with rich colours to set off the rest.
Thank you for funding through inc. and the finishing help that I could not have done without from artists Fabiola Martinez and William Duncan and the cooperation of Greg Stewart of AJ’s for letting us paint his wall, ladders, scaffolding, encouragement and patience.
