A deck takes a tremendous amount of punishment in our hot and cold climate. Applying an oil protects it from moisture and deflects UV rays. It won't rot, and it won't turn grey on you.

Just like anything, it needs maintenance. Once you start, the effort to maintain it goes down with consistency.

Solid deck paint fails because wood moves. It expands and contracts with moisture and temperature, and paint film can't keep up with that forever. Once it starts cracking, water gets in under the edges and the peeling accelerates fast.

You can't just paint over it at that point. The new coat has nothing solid to bond to.
This deck needed full mechanical removal, drum sander, grinder discs, countless passes — before it was ready for stain.

Oil-based penetrates the grain instead of forming a film, so there's nothing to peel. Touch it up every couple years and it stays ahead of the weather.
