Snow Mold
With spring upon us and the snow melting, it is time to start thinking about your lawn again. One of the issues that can arise over the winter is snow mold. Snow mold can be either gray or pink in colour and have a web like look to it. It happens when we get a heavy snowfall before the ground has completely frozen. That, combined with cover from leaves and lawn debris, can increase the likelihood for snow mold to appear.
If you find snow mold on your lawn, gently rake the affected areas loosening up any matted grass. This will help the lawn dry up and give your grass room to grow.
After a gentle rake and time to dry, should you find the affected areas not recovering, you will want to apply a high-quality grass seed once our weather permits. After a few weeks of watering and allowing the seed to grow, your grass should be recovering nicely.
Tips to prevent snow mold include cutting your lawn short before the first snowfall, picking up leaves and debris in the fall and when clearing snow, try not to pile too high in one area.
Though snow mold can be detrimental to your grass, following these guidelines can minimize any damage.
