Timber Frame vs. Post & Beam: What's the difference?

At first glance, they can look very similar.
The key difference is often found in the joinery.
Traditional timber framing connects substantial timbers using precisely crafted wood-to-wood joinery, often secured with wooden pegs. Post-and-beam construction can achieve a similar exposed-timber look while using mechanical fasteners or metal connectors.

It's one of those details you might not notice at first—but once you know what you're looking for, you'll start seeing it everywhere.

Can you spot the joinery in this Mountain Lion project?

Whether you're building a home, a cabin or a shed, here are some things to think about before construction begins:

🏡Purpose - How will the space actually be used?

📍Location - Consider sun exposure, wind, drainage, access and surrounding structures.

📐Size and layout - Make sure the design fits both the property and the way you plan to use the space.

🏠Roof design - Roof pitch, snow load and drainage should be considered early.

🪵Materials and finishes - Timber species, stain, hardware and exterior finishes all affect the final look and long-term maintenance.

💡Future plans - Think ahead about lighting, storage, privacy, screens, additions or other features you may want later.

⚒Good planning at the beginning can help prevent costly changes during construction and result in a structure that works well for years to come.🔨

A quick clarification about our photos.

Everything you see in our posts is our real work. The timber structures, craftsmanship and projects we feature are built by Mountain Lion Timbercraft.

You may sometimes see an “AI” notice on our social media posts. We use photo-editing tools, including AI-assisted tools, to enhance things such as lighting, colour balance, contrast, sharpness, and image sizing. It also allows us to remove obstacles, or add a background so our work presents well on social media.

We do not use AI to create projects and present them as work we have completed.

These two photos show the difference: one is the original photograph and the other has been enhanced for social media.

Same project. Same craftsmanship. Just a better photograph.
