It's that time again! Once every three years or so. :-)

Time to pester you about my new book!

"Captain's Away! Beausoleil" is officially available Nov 1st. We will be celebrating the launch Saturday Nov 28th 2-4pm at the Riverview Public Library. I will be asking my friends at the local Sobeys to make a cake for the occasion!

This novel is set in the same universe as my novel "A Time and a Place", but one thousand years in the future. With at least one of the same characters....

I hope to see you at the launch!

***

One thousand years in the future, Earth is a distant memory. Seventeen-year-old Marie-Josée Doucette is responsible for hundreds of lives and an entire starship. While lying in a coma.

When her home space station, Evangeline, is obliterated in the opening volley of a war, Marie-Josée’s family and their fellow Acadians are cast adrift as refugees. But when a military experiment involving an ancient alien artifact goes catastrophically wrong, Marie-Josée’s consciousness is transferred into the body of a battle-scarred, forty-year-old starship captain: the commander of Beausoleil, a military vessel on a classified mission.

The crew needs a proper captain—not a teenager cosplaying one. A captain who can keep hostile aliens, murderous despots, and space itself from killing them. But when her second-in-command starts making reckless decisions that endanger everyone aboard, Marie-Josée must uncover the truth behind Beausoleil’s secret mission.

Desperate to get her own body back and terrified of being exposed as a fraud, Marie-Josée has no choice but to step up and figure out how to be a captain before the grown-ups get them all killed.

Joe isn’t just the brains and behind-the-scenes here at Donovan Street Press… he was also our first author! (Or maybe second, just behind his dad… but that’s a debate for later.) With a CBC retirement in his recent past and a novel in his hand, Joe set out to help like-minded authors along his journey in the publishing industry.

His love of books sparked early: likely with that first Bobbsey Twins book, which quickly led into Heinlein, Asimov, and a deep dive into science fiction. As Joe says, once you get the reading bug, that’s it. You’re done for. 🤓

Joe’s writing process is slow but sure. If he can only live another few hundred years, DSP will certainly publish many, many more of his books!

He’s currently working on a science fiction sequel called Captain’s Away: Robo Kun. It’s a story so long in the making he forgets its inspiration – though the title combines robots and a personal interest in karate. But he’ll always be proudest of his first novel, A Time and A Place. Writing a book of your own? “Do it! Finish it! You won’t regret it!”

📖 Favourite author: Tim Powers. He writes amazing books! The only writer whose books I read one after the other until I’d finished them all.

📖 Favourite book at the moment: The one I’m reading! A biography of Kate Bush called Under the Ivy… can’t stop reading it every chance I get.

A little over a year ago I heard a pitch for a book at a Pitch the Publisher event held by the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick. That book was The Druid and the Dragon by Paul Burns, a young adult fantasy. Perfect for Donovan Street Press!

I decided to take on and help Paul develop his novel for Donovan Street Press. We're both super pleased with the results, especially considering it has one of the best dragon characters I've ever read in a book: Nightwind, a funny, smart, egotistical, old and cranky dragon.

The Druid and the Dragon is now available everywhere fine books are sold (if a bookstore isn't selling it, maybe they're not selling the finest books? Just sayin'... )

And we will celebrate the publication of this fine book tomorrow, Saturday September 12th at 2pm in the Riverview Public Library.

We hope to see you there! There will be books, cake and coffee. What more do you need in life? :-)

This coming Saturday afternoon, Sept 12th, 2pm I hope you'll join us at the Riverview Public Library for the launch of local author Paul Burns' novel The Druid and the Dragon.

There will be cake! Coffee! Fellowship! And maybe a short speech or two, along with copies of Paul's book.

You are under no obligation to attend, of course. But if you don't, it might make a certain already kind of grouchy dragon a little cranky. Just sayin'!

Today we are proud to publish the tenth book by Donovan Street Press!

The Druid and the Dragon by Paul Burns.

Paul is an author from Riverview, New Brunswick. The Druid and the Dragon is his third book:

Sixteen-year-old Fraser Campbell knows what it’s like to face bullies—high school has made sure of that. But standing up to a few teenagers is nothing compared to facing a dark wizard.
When Nightwind, a grouchy old dragon, whisks Fraser away to the magical realm of Terranaught, he’s thrust into a world he never knew existed and a destiny he never asked for: defeat the powerful wizard Lord Borath. The problem? No one, least of all Fraser, believes he can do it, except Nightwind.

To have any chance at all, Fraser must push past his fear and self-doubt to master the ways of both Guardian and Druid in only a few short months—not the years it usually takes to learn. But even if he manages that, how can a kid who’s never believed in himself and a dragon a hundred years past his prime stand against the greatest evil Terranaught has ever known?

COMING SEPTEMBER 1ST FROM DONOVAN STREET PRESS

(Psst: It's actually already available some places if you know where to look!)

THE DRUID AND THE DRAGON by Paul Burns:

Fraser hugged the old dragon around the neck. “You be careful, you crazy old lizard. Not that I care, but you’re my ride home, and it’s a long walk.”

Nightwind grinned as only a dragon could, revealing incisors the size of scimitars. He shuffled slowly towards the nearest window, where he broke the glazing and shrank down sufficiently to fit through it. He regained his normal size as soon as he was outside.

Fraser heard him yell out a nasty insult for Nightshade to join him so he could administer another beating, the way he used to do when they’d been young.

“This time Mother isn’t here to save your sorry hide,” the old dragon taunted.

An angry roar from somewhere above suggested that Nightshade had taken the bait. Quick tempers must run in the family, Fraser thought.
