🏠 THE “VANCOUVER SPECIAL” SERIES -

Day 1: Brightening the Main Floor

The Problem: Because Vancouver Specials are "boxy" and often maximize the city lot's width, the main floor living areas (typically featuring a brick or rock-face fireplace) can feel narrow and dim.
The Goal: Use strategic painting techniques to open up the space and eliminate that "bowling alley" feel.
Day 1: Tips for a Luminous Living Room
• Modernize the Brick Focal Point: The classic fireplace is often a heavy brick or rock face that matches the exterior. Painting this a crisp white can immediately make it a modern focal point rather than a dark weight in the room.
• The "One-Color" Ceiling Trick: These homes often have lower ceilings (around 8 feet). Paint the ceiling and walls the same off-white (like Simply White) to remove the visual break at the ceiling line, making the room feel taller.
• Brighten with High-LRV Colors: Use colors with a high Light Reflectance Value (LRV) to bounce limited natural light from the front windows throughout the long floor plan. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster is excellent for keeping warmth without losing brightness.

Stel’s Pro Tips: Walls & Floors
The Walls: Brightness Meets Durability
Most Vancouver garages are dim and prone to moisture. Your choice of wall paint needs to solve both problems.
• Go Light to "Add" Light: In a windowless garage, Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17) or Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008) are the gold standards. They reflect light from your overhead fixtures, making it easier to find tools or park.
• The "Dirt-Hiding" Gray: If you actually work on cars, avoid pure white. A light gray like Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray (HC-170) hides smudges and tire spray much better while still keeping the room bright.
• The Finish Matters: Never use Flat or Matte in a garage. Use Satin or Semi-Gloss. Why? Because you can actually wipe oil or dust off a semi-gloss wall. Flat paint will just absorb the stain forever.
• Mildew Resistance: Since BC is humid, ask for a paint with antimicrobial additives to prevent that damp "garage smell" and mildew growth on the drywall.

The Floor: Surviving the "Hot Tire" & Rain floors take a beating from rain-soaked tires and road salt. Standard concrete paint usually peels within a year; you need something that bonds.
• Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic: * Epoxy is great for DIYers and budget-friendly projects. It’s tough, but it can yellow over time if your garage door stays open in the sun.
• Polyaspartic/Polyurea is the "Gold Standard." It cures in one day, doesn't yellow, and is flexible enough to handle the expansion/contraction of concrete during our winter-to-spring temperature swings.
• Beware of "Hot Tire Pickup": Cheaper paints will literally stick to your tires. When you drive out, the paint peels off with the tire. Look for 2-part industrial coatings to ensure the floor stays on the ground, not on your rubber.
• Add "The Grip": Bare painted concrete is like an ice rink when wet (and in Vancouver, it's always wet). Always mix in an anti-skid additive (like SharkGrip) into the final topcoat to prevent slips.

The key here is to leverage light-reflecting colors and strategic contrast to make the most of every lumen. Our goal? To make your small foyer feel larger, lighter, and much more welcoming.

💡 Small, Dark Foyer Pro Tip!
For small, dark foyers, ensure your trim, molding, and ceiling are painted a brilliant white (like Chantilly Lace). This crisp contrast against slightly warmer white walls (like White Dove) creates definition and tricks the eye into perceiving more space and light. Also, consider reflective surfaces like a mirror and good lighting fixtures!
