Is water softened with a water softener using salt safe to drink?

Softened water, which is treated with salt, is entirely safe to drink. While there is a slight increase in sodium due to the exchange of calcium and magnesium for sodium during the softening process, the additional amount is minimal compared to typical dietary intake.
