Yesterday was World Architecture Day.

This year’s theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”, is particularly meaningful to us here at Berry Architecture.

The Government of Canada has committed an initial $13 billion over five years to Build Canada Homes, with the goal of expanding affordable housing across the country.

The need is clear. We believe it is possible to build resilient, accessible, and affordable multi-unit housing that strengthens communities and gives people places where they can truly belong.

But progress requires more than recognizing the need. We must continue the conversation. We must advocate for better housing. We must design it—and we must build it.

This World Green Building Week, we’re highlighting how we can so it can be .

Resilience begins with the first design decisions.

When wildfire reached this winery and destroyed neighbouring buildings, its metal walls and standing-seam metal roof helped protect it from ignition.

Sometimes, building green means choosing materials that can withstand changing climate conditions and last their full expected lifetime. This can prevent premature re-building, unnecessary waste, and long-term costs.

At the same time, we must continue lowering embodied carbon to help address the climate change intensifying these risks.

Every material choice has an impact. The goal is to understand those impacts and choose intentionally.
