This renovation followed a full interior update, where the home was redesigned in a soft, contemporary style.

The backyard needed to do more than function—it needed to read as part of the interior experience, especially from the second-storey living space overlooking the garden.

The design builds on an existing retaining wall and patio, adding layers that create both use and visual depth:

– Curved walls that extend seating and soften the structure
– Defined patio spaces that align with interior sightlines
– A new sauna with an adjacent outdoor area for year-round use
– A layout that creates interest from above as well as at ground level

From inside, the landscape becomes part of the architecture.
From outside, it becomes a space to move through and use.

Good design considers both perspectives.

In Red Deer, Calgary, and Central Alberta outdoor spaces can be more than functional—they can complete the experience of the home.

If you’re renovating and want your landscape to match the level of your interior, I’m happy to share ideas.

Martin Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Martin’) is one of the best-performing fruiting shrubs for edible landscape design in Central Alberta, Red Deer, Calgary.

This improved variety produces larger, more uniform blue berries with excellent flavour, and is known for being a heavy, reliable producer.

It’s a refined selection of Thiessen, offering better consistency and a more compact growth habit.

Growing characteristics:

– Sun to part shade
– Approximately 3m tall x 2m wide
– Early summer harvest
– Dense growth with strong structure

Why it works in food garden design:

– Extremely hardy and well-adapted to prairie conditions
– Large fruit size compared to other Saskatoons
– High yields with consistent ripening
– Works as both a feature shrub and productive hedge

This project was designed as a fully custom landscape with a modern design language, while still feeling connected to nature.

A key feature is the metal waterfall and trough feature, designed to create movement and sound right off the main deck.

A small flat bridge crosses the water, turning circulation through the space into part of the experience—not just function.

The surrounding patio uses large-format square pavers to reinforce a clean, contemporary geometry that anchors the design.

The goal for this project was simple:
Create something original, modern, and deeply connected to how the clients actually use the space

This large urban property was designed for retired homeowners who wanted something simple:
a landscape they could enjoy—and leave—without worry.

The challenge was openness. The entire property was visible from the street and neighbouring homes.

The solution wasn’t fencing—it was a layered planting design.

– A sequence of ornamental grass, large, medium, and low shrub hedges to create soft privacy
– Canopy trees along the drive to frame arrival and reduce exposure
– Columnar tree hedges defining side boundaries
– A curved front driveway to soften the scale of the space and redirect the view from the street
– Additional side parking with gravel surfaces for flexibility and drainage
– Coloured concrete with contrasting tones at the garage apron and front patio

With privacy established through planting, the homeowners gained something unexpected:
a south-facing front patio—a comfortable, usable outdoor space at the front of the home, as well as in the back.

Low maintenance doesn’t mean empty.
It means designing a space that works quietly in the background.

In Red Deer, thoughtful planting and layout can create privacy, function, and ease—without closing a property off.

If you’re thinking about simplifying your landscape or planning for more flexibility, I’m happy to share ideas.

Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry (Ribes ‘Hinnomaki Red’) is a cold-hardy, highly productive fruiting shrub ideal for food garden design in Central Alberta.

It produces large, deep-red fruit with a tart, distinctive flavour, making it especially well-suited for baking, pies, and desserts.

This is a reliable and popular variety among gardeners for its high yield and consistent performance throughout the season.

Growing characteristics:

– Full sun preferred
– Approximately 1m tall x 2m wide
– Spreading growth habit over time
– Mid-summer harvest

Why it works in food garden design:

– Cold hardy and dependable in Alberta climates
– High-producing fruiting shrub
– Excellent for edible borders or mixed food gardens
– Adds both structure and harvest to the landscape

In food-focused landscapes in Red Deer, Calgary, and Central Alberta, gooseberries like this help create gardens that are both functional and beautiful.

If you’re planning a food garden, this is one of the most productive shrubs to include.

This front yard was dominated by driveway—no clear sense of arrival, and no connection to the front door.

We designed the space by shaping the hardscape.

– A circular patio was integrated into the drive
– A paving stone border draws your eye to the entrance
– A columnar rock water feature creates a focal point at the door
– A soft lawn edge balances the hard surfaces

Small, intentional moves—but they completely change how the space feels when you arrive.

Good landscape design isn’t about adding more.
It’s about placing the right elements in the right way.

If your front entry feels off, it’s usually the layout. Message for a design quote.

This garden renovation was designed to create a space that feels calm, clear, and easy to live in.

The original layout was reworked into something more structured—where every element has a purpose and nothing feels accidental.

– A crisp, architectural layout to organize the space
– Wooden raised vegetable boxes for manageable growing
– A pergola reading area designed as a quiet retreat
– A circular focal point to anchor the garden and guide movement

The result is a landscape that feels intentional, not busy.
Low maintenance, but still rich in experience.

Good design doesn’t mean adding more—it means refining what’s there until it works.

In Red Deer, low-maintenance landscapes don’t have to feel empty—they can still be layered, productive, and personal.

If you’re looking to simplify your yard without losing its character, I’m happy to share a few ideas.

Ben Conan Black Currant (Ribes nigrum ‘Ben Conan’) is a high-performing edible shrub for food garden design in Central Alberta.

It produces large, richly flavoured black currants and is known for being highly disease resistant and reliable year after year.

This is a compact plant, growing approximately 90cm x 90cm, making it ideal for smaller food gardens, borders, or integrated edible landscape designs.

Why it’s valued in food garden design:

– Excellent, full-bodied flavour
– Very productive and hardy
– Great for jams, pies, yogurts, and cooking
– Strong disease resistance compared to many traditional currants

Growth note:

As fruit develops, branches can become heavy and may naturally bend under the weight at harvest time—this is normal and often a sign of a strong yield.

In food-focused landscapes in Red Deer and Central Alberta, plants like this bring both structure and harvest into the same design space.

If you’re building a food garden, this is one of the most dependable shrubs I recommend

Designing in natural spaces doesn’t mean clearing them.

One of the best low-impact approaches is to raise structures above the forest floor—boardwalks, stairs, and decks that work with the landscape instead of against it.

This protects:
– Root systems
– Native plants
– Soil health and drainage

And it creates a much more immersive experience moving through the space.

In places like Red Deer and surrounding areas, this approach helps preserve what makes a site special in the first place.

If you’re working with a natural lot, thoughtful design matters.

This landscape was designed for a homeowner thinking long-term—how to live, garden, and move comfortably through the space well into retirement.

Instead of a traditional yard, the focus shifted to accessibility, usability, and food production.

– A wraparound deck and veranda walk for continuous movement
– Gradual ramps integrated into the layout for wheelchair access
– Packed gravel pathways for stable, low-maintenance circulation
– Raised keyhole vegetable gardens for easy reach and efficiency
– Reused tire planters and a spiral herb garden for layered growing
– A food forest of trees and shrubs for long-term yield
– A privacy hedge with an alpine rock garden edge

No lawn. No wasted space. Every element has a purpose.

This is what food garden design can look like when it’s planned for real life—not just appearance.

In places like Red Deer, Calgary, and Central Alberta, designing for long-term use and independence is just as important as aesthetics.

If you’re thinking about how your yard can support you long-term, I’m happy to take a look and share ideas
