The Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) presented its inaugural Community Forest Project of the Year Award to the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society’s (KDCFS) ‘Jimi Crack Corn’ forest enhancement project. The KDCFS received the award during the 2026 BC Community Forest Association - BCCFA Conference and AGM in Vernon last week.

“In celebration of FESBC’s tenth anniversary, we created the Community Forest Project of the Year Award to recognize the leadership, innovation, and collaboration that community forests bring to forest stewardship across British Columbia,” said Jason Fisher, Executive Director of the Forest Enhancement Society of BC. “Community forests are uniquely positioned to deliver projects that reflect local priorities while creating long-term benefits for forests and British Columbians. The first recipient of this annual award is the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society for their Jimi Crack Corn project. This project stood out because it demonstrated strong collaboration, meaningful community engagement, and excellent results including wildfire risk reduction with tangible recreational and ecological outcomes.”

Building wildfire resilience is about creating healthier forests and stronger opportunities for future generations.

For years, the Nazko community has been taking proactive steps to reduce wildfire risk through fuel management, FireSmart initiatives, and community education. These efforts have already proven successful, with previously treated areas helping reduce wildfire impacts during real-world fire events. Now, Nazko First Nation is looking at how larger-scale forest management approaches can help protect the community while also supporting wildlife habitat, cultural values, food security, recreation opportunities, and future economic development.

The FESBC Board and staff plus other special guests from BC Wildfire Service were invited out on the traditional territory of the Nazko people, where the second phase of an FESBC-funded fuel reduction project is underway. The project is creating a more resilient landscape that will reduce wildfire risk to the nearby community while improving wildlife habitat, restoring opportunities for traditional use, and advancing long-term stewardship goals.

FESBC is proud to invest in projects that create innovative approaches to support resilient forests.

Today, the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) welcomed an announcement from the Government of Canada that includes $37 million in funding to support the recovery and utilization of low-value and residual forest wood fibre across British Columbia.

For more than a decade, we have invested in projects that deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits for communities throughout the province. This funding will help turn fibre that may otherwise be burned into valuable products such as pulp, paper, pellets, bioenergy, and other innovative products.

The work will be carried out by proponents such as First Nations, local governments, contractors, foresters, community forests, and others throughout B.C., creating jobs, supporting rural and Indigenous communities, and helping maximize the value of every tree harvested or salvaged.

This investment aligns with our Society's commitment to helping create healthier, more resilient forests for generations.

A big thank you to Dunkley Lumber, the City of Quesnel, the Nazko First Nation and our host Erin Robinson for welcoming the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) Board of Directors and staff.

Our Board and staff had the opportunity to learn more about the work being done in the forests surrounding Quesnel and see firsthand how these projects are helping create healthier, more resilient forests while supporting local jobs and communities. Visits like these are an important reminder that forest enhancement projects deliver real benefits on the ground, from reducing wildfire risk and improving forest health to supporting the people and businesses that depend on our forests.

Thank you to everyone who shared their time, knowledge, and hospitality with us. We appreciate the opportunity to see this important work up close.
