As a Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation-owned company, K’awa’tsi Construction is honoured to help bring income-based housing to Indigenous families and Elders in our community.

Thank you to our partners at BC Housing, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Housing Society.

The Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Housing Society hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on July 22nd to officially commence construction of its new 27-unit affordable housing development at 8925 Park Drive in Port Hardy.

This project is a crucial step towards addressing the urgent need for safe, affordable, and culturally-appropriate housing for Indigenous households and Elders in Port Hardy and the District of Mt. Waddington. Rent will be geared to income.

Thank you to our partners, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations, for coming !

🌞🏗️ Summer's here 🏗️🌞

Hey crew! 🌞 As the sun blazes down and the temperatures rise, it’s crucial to stay safe and comfy on the job site.

First things first, stay hydrated. 💧 Keep that water bottle with you and take sips all day. Dehydration can sneak up on you faster than you think!

Next, dress smart. 🧢 Light-colored, loose-fitting clothes are your best friends right now (with all the PPE in place). They reflect the sun’s rays and help you stay cool. And don’t forget your hat and sunglasses to protect against those UV rays!

Take breaks. 🛑 Schedule regular breaks in shaded or cool areas. Your body needs a chance to recover from the heat.

Sunscreen is a must. ☀️ Slather on that broad-spectrum SPF 30 (at least) and reapply every couple of hours, especially if you’re sweating a lot. Your skin will be more than thankful.

Be on the lookout for heat illness. 🚨 Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you or a buddy feel dizzy, weak, or nauseous, find some shade and cool down ASAP. Don’t hesitate to seek medical help if needed.

Plan your day wisely. 🗓️ Try to schedule the heavy lifting for the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late afternoon. Avoid working too hard during peak heat.

Lastly, eat light. 🍏 Go for meals that are easy to digest. Fruits and veggies are great—they help keep you hydrated and energized.

Stay safe, stay cool, and keep building! 💪🏽👷‍♂️👷‍♀️

Last week, K'awat'si Economic Development Corporation - KEDC hosted the community for their Kwił (feast). During the feast, the Board of Directors updated the Community on the new direction they are taking the company. One that strips away traditional colonial practices and reinforces traditional cultural protocols.

K’awat’si Construction Company (KCC) was proud to be part of this event. Our team received heartfelt praise for the work done at the Big House site, and it was gratifying to celebrate the success and unity of our Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community.

Here’s to more opportunities to build stronger community relationships in the future.

Years ago, we embarked on a journey to transform it into something extraordinary.

Through dedication and respect for our heritage, it became Kwa’lilas Hotel. 🌿

A cultural maverick, reflecting the spirit of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations.
