Recently we had a couple questions regarding our choice of base prep. We are making this post to clarify.

While a dense graded base using A-Gravel and screenings has long been the go to installation practice, there has been a shift to open graded base with 3/4 clear and #9 crushed (HPB)

The open graded base carries all the same strength as a dense graded base while offering higher drainage capabilities, and less need for compaction. This results in a system that is less susceptible to freeze-thaw heaving as it does not hold moisture, and also less susceptible to settling as there are less fines in the gravel taking up void space. Angular clear stone has thousands of contact points that see very little movement.

Open graded base is definitely the material of the future and what we see most if not all high end contractors installing.
