Include Nature

04/22/2024

Hi All, just a little update from me...I am now Co-President and Membership Chair for The Southport Horticultural Society. Please feel free to follow them on social media for gardening tips/tricks as I am also managing their social media at the moment. Thanks so much for your support!

Happy Earth Day!!! A couple of tips for gardening sustainably:

1) Keep leaving your leaves, bees and beneficial insects are still hibernating until we have 10 consecutive days at 10 degrees or warmer. According to the weather network that will be about May 6th...
2) If shopping for plants this spring please consider adding some species that are native to Ontario.
3) Avoid using insecticides or herbicides on your properties as they do more harm than good for our planet.

HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE!

I have been wonderfully busy and fell behind in my weekly bloom posts. In honour of the first day of summer I have compiled a few of my favourites from this past spring that I haven't been able to highlight yet. Names of each plant will be in the comments.

This picture is for my Mom who planted 2 baby Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) shrubs this week. Here is what you have to look forward to...

This week's floral highlight is beautiful Foam Flower (Tiarella cordifolia). It's so soft yet dramatic while in bloom 💕

If you are dividing your plants this weekend and are left with extras please think about donating them to the Southport Horticultural Society plant sale.

What a beautiful day!!! I saw my first dragonfly of the season!!! 😍 Clearly, I am very excited.

Today for my "in bloom" post I am featuring Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum). It is one of my favourite spring blooming plants which actually has been in bloom for about week or so but I was waiting for it to go to seed because that's when it really shines (I will post another picture in the comments when that happens). It was being frequented by adorable bumblebees this morning which is why I could no longer resist posting about it...

Make time to get out and enjoy the nature that surrounds us! If you plant it, they will come 🐝🦋

I'm hoping to get out to volunteer a couple of the dates posted. Let me know if you are interested in joining me ☺️

We need your help. Five days are set as volunteers come together to help tackle the Garlic Mustard evasive plant problem that we have in Saugeen Shores. Please consider coming to help. Thank you!

Happy Tuesday, friends! This week my Wild Plum (Prunus americana) tree is in bloom and it smells fantastic! I am grateful for the rain but ready to take advantage of the next sunny day as this baby tree is in my direct line of sight in my reading garden.
