Over the weekend, we received a call from a business owner who had noticed the smell of burning plastic and called the fire department.

Using heat-detecting cameras, the fire department found the source: a 40A range receptacle that had melted from extreme heat.

The cause? Poor electrical connections.

One connection had become so hot it damaged the appliance cord end and burned through the receptacle at one terminal. When the receptacle was pulled from the wall, another wire came loose from its termination point — another sign of a poor connection.

That is what makes poor connections so dangerous.

Everything can appear to be working normally. It may seem like everything is fine. But hidden dangers can reveal themselves months, or even years, later.

A few important reminders:

Make sure your electrician takes pride in clean, quality workmanship.
Make sure permits are pulled when required. Make sure the work is warrantied.

Electrical work is not the place to cut corners. A poor connection may seem small, but it can become a serious fire hazard.
