Behind the vibrant displays at Chevrefils Greenhouse is a team that understands every stage of the growing process. Many of the plants are started on-site, from seed or cuttings, and nurtured over months before they ever reach the sales floor.
“You don’t often think about what went into that pot of flowers. Behind the scenes, it is a lot of work — from mixing the soil, filling the pots, planting and then tending to the plants until they are ready to sell and then hauling and displaying them to the retail greenhouses. You are sure to get your steps in daily,” Heather says.
That work is carried out by a dedicated staff that swells during peak season, including experienced full-time workers and new and returning students who know the operation inside and out, building their knowledge and becoming trusted resources for customers.
The greenhouse’s expertise extends beyond retail. Chevrefils Greenhouse is the trusted supplier for major contracts, including a regional casino, a major restaurant chain in Winnipeg, the Town of Bissett and the Town of Powerview-Pine Falls.
Their full-service planter program is used by many businesses; both local and beyond. Staff design, plant, care for and then deliver the flowering pots in June. All the business has to do is water. Then in the fall, the pots are picked up, cleaned and stored until the next year. It’s a simple concept that has worked for years and speaks to the confidence clients place in their work.
Chevrefils Greenhouse also offers fundraising opportunities. For school grads and trips, cancer awareness, and daycare playground equipment, the greenhouse sells pots of colourful flowers and when ready, people can pick them up. An organization can make around $10 per pot sold.
