What Is Proper Procedure When the Crosswalk Countdown Starts?

When the countdown starts at a crosswalk, what are you supposed to do? Is it correct to wait until the next time the light turns green, or if it says five seconds, does that mean you have five seconds to get across?

The answer is clear, but most of us don't actually realize it. The countdown isn't a challenge -- once it starts, you're supposed to stay put if you haven't started crossing.

According to Toronto Police, the countdown is just meant to indicate how much time you have left to cross when you're already in the roadway. The flashing hand that accompanies the countdown means don't walk. Section 144 (27) of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act also says "no pedestrian approaching pedestrian-control signals and facing a solid or flashing 'don't walk' indication shall enter the roadway." To put it simply: legally, you can only start crossing when the walk signal is on.

If you do step off the curb to cross when that hand is there -- whether it's flashing or solid -- you could face a $35 fine.
