Perth & District Horticultural Society

Perth & District Horticultural Society We are a horticultural society in Perth, Ontario where we promote gardening and horticultural information through meetings and being visible in our community.

We meet once a month from Feb to June and Sept to Nov. Membership is $20.00 per year per member. We have monthly meetings at the Perth Lions Club, 50 Arthur Street, Perth, the second Tuesday of the month from March-June and Sept-Oct and the third Tuesday in November. February is a Zoom meeting. There are many benefits to joining our horticultural society. You can learn about gardening: growing veg

etables and flowers, hydroponics, bees and pollinators, native plants, flower arranging and competitions, and have your gardening questions answered by our master gardeners. We maintain some community gardens in Perth. We also have an annual plant sale. Members receive a 10% discount on plants at local businesses, including Reid Gardens, Gemmell’s Garden Center, Kiwi Gardens, and Whitehouse Perennials, to name a few.

The next Perth and District Horticultural Society (PDHS) meeting is on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 PM at the Perth Lions Club, 50 Arthur Street. Our topic will be Notes on A Japanese Garden by Barbara Sibbald, author and Master Gardener. In a Japanese-themed garden, a small space holds big ideas about designing with plants, stone, water and “ma”, the all-important space in between. Part garden travelogue, part gardening experiment, this lecture aims to inspire. Barbara, who has been nurturing ornamentals since 1985, loves the design process nearly as much as the plants. During COVID, she redesigned half of her backyard to create a Japanese-informed garden. Barbara is also an award-winning journalist and author of four novels and a collection of short fiction. She became a Master Gardener in 2024. Membership: $20.00/Year; Guests: $5.00/Meeting

The next Perth and District Horticultural Society (PDHS) meeting is next Tuesday, April 14, at 7 PM at the Perth Lions Club, 50 Arthur Street. Landscape designer Ashley Cochrane and biologist Shelley Ball will present “A Journey in Landscape Design: Blending Nature with Aesthetic Harmony.” They’ll share their experiences in landscape design and native plant cultivation, challenge traditional garden concepts, and explore how naturalistic approaches—using native plants and working with local conditions—can create landscapes that function as thriving ecosystems. Join us to learn how we can apply a more naturalistic approach to garden design without compromising beauty, flow and order. Membership: $20.00/Year; Guests: $5.00/Meeting
