THANK YOU!

Some things matter far more than the outcome of an election.

We don’t often get political at Patan Heating and Air, but today we want to recognize Doug Patan, and the incredible support of his wife, Julie Patan.

On August 7, Doug and Julie were living with Joel and his family after selling their home and looking for their next place to call home.

When the Bald Range wildfire came through, they evacuated alongside so many others, suddenly facing the same uncertainty and displacement as the families around them.

Yet, in the middle of it all, they showed up.

Doug and Julie became one of many driving forces behind our Total-Loss Family Free Store, putting in countless hours to ensure families had the essentials, support and dignity they deserved.

They also stood behind Joel, Kelly and their girls, making so much of the work Joel has done for our community possible while helping their own family navigate an unimaginable loss.

We believe many across Rural Summerland and Summerland as a whole, especially those affected by the Bald Range wildfire, share our gratitude for everything Doug and Julie have done.

As Doug seeks another term on Summerland Council, we want to recognize something that goes far beyond politics.

Doug, no matter the outcome, you demonstrated selflessness, compassion and what it means to be a true community leader.

You showed up as a father, a grandfather, a friend and a neighbour, even when your own family was facing uncertainty.

No election result can ever take away what you’ve done for your family and your community.

Thank you, Doug and Julie, for standing behind the people of Summerland when they needed you most.

FREE STORE UPDATE: COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER

This is what community looks like.

Doug and I travelled to Cawston to meet with Jarnail and Neeta from the Pentictonsikhtemple, and we were absolutely blown away by their generosity.

They donated more than 10 pallets of non-perishable food, water and toiletries to support our total-loss families and the Summerland Food Bank.

But then we had to figure out where to put it all!

BigSteelBox stepped up and donated two 20-foot sea cans to help us store this incredible amount of generosity.

Then the Summerland Alliance Church donated space for us to place the sea cans.

And then Angela from Mountain View Growers Inc showed up with her forklift and helped us unload and move everything into storage.

One organization stepped up, then another, then another.

A community effort spanning an entire region.

From Cawston to Penticton to Summerland, people and organizations continue to show what can happen when communities come together to help their neighbours.

To Jarnail, Neeta, the Penticton Sikh Temple, Big Steel Box, Summerland Alliance Church, Angela and Mountain View Growers — thank you.

And to everyone who continues to donate, volunteer, share our posts and support these families, thank you for continuing to show up.

I think we’ve forgotten that our province is a system.

Behind the scenes, I’ve been advocating on issues affecting Faulder, Meadow Valley and Rural Area F. The deeper I get, the more I wonder if we’re looking at some of our biggest problems the wrong way.

Think about your house.

If one room is always cold, you don’t automatically replace the furnace. You look at the whole system: insulation, windows, airflow, controls and heating equipment. Different parts, one system.

Government isn’t that different.

We created ministries to divide responsibilities. Somewhere along the way, we started dividing the problems too.

Wildfire isn’t just firefighting. It connects climate, forestry, land stewardship, emergency response and our economy.

Water isn’t just drinking water. It supports agriculture, creates wildfire resilience and gives emergency services the water they need when fire comes.

Housing connects too. When vulnerable people are pushed out of urban centres and seek refuge on Crown land or places like Crump Rec Site, an urban issue can become a rural land management, public safety and wildfire issue.

The dots are connected.

Yet communities are increasingly saying, “Give us what we need and we’ll solve our problem ourselves.”

But is it really only their problem?

Area F touches multiple jurisdictions. Fire, water, forests, economies and people cross those boundaries every day. A problem left unresolved in one place can become another community’s problem.

We figured out how to share a regional library system. Maybe we need a bigger conversation about regional services and emergency response, and whether every solution should fall entirely on individual communities and ratepayers.

Sometimes the cost of fixing something benefits more than those paying the bill. The cost of not fixing it can eventually land on everyone.

British Columbia is the system. Ministries, jurisdictions and communities are its parts.

Maybe instead of asking, “Whose problem is this?” we should ask:

“What else does this problem touch?”

The Free Store is changing as our families’ needs change.

The kids’ rooms are starting to take shape, and we’re getting a meeting room going. These are the beginnings of Stage 2: working toward a space for families to connect, access support and navigate what comes next.

But we still have so much here that needs to reach our total-loss families.

Whether you’ve visited before or haven’t made it in yet, please come see us. These donations were given to help you. Take what you need to make your space feel a little more like home.

As families settle into places to live, we also need to restock the essentials below. Starting over means replacing so many everyday things.

FREE STORE UPDATE — IT TAKES AN ARMY ❤️

Before we get into what we need, I want to recognize the people behind this Free Store.

Doug and Julie Patan, Adrienne and Paige Foggo, our community members who continue to step up, and of course, our beloved volunteers.

As many know, I have a lot going on beyond the obvious. Between Patan Heating, bringing my invention to market with Denali HVAC Products, Our Valley, the Free Store, navigating our own total loss, and most importantly being a dad and partner — my time disappears fast.

It takes an army to make this happen, and thankfully, we have some of the best generals you could ever ask for.

They organize, sort, carry boxes, help families and keep everything moving when I can’t be there. I get thanked a lot for the Total-Loss Free Store, but this has never been one person’s accomplishment.

I truly cannot express my gratitude to everyone who has helped. ❤️

🛠️ TOOLS FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Our good friends Greg and Lacey Smith are also a total-loss family. While rebuilding their own lives, they’re helping others rebuild theirs.

Greg and his team at CRL Group Holdings are collecting good used hand tools, power tools, air tools, gardening tools and yard tools.

Now neighbours are helping neighbours rebuild those toolboxes.

Share Our Post. Share Your Faulder Story.

This picture brings back one of my favourite kinds of memories.

Chloe and Blake were always pretty fearless growing up out here. Snow, mud, quads, trails — it really didn’t matter.

And in the wise words of Grandpa Doug:

“HIT IT!”

That was usually the beginning of an adventure.

For our girls, adventure started at our front door. But over the years, I’ve realized just how many people came through our little community to start theirs.

The KVR. Darke Lake. Crump. Trout Creek. Hunting, fishing, hiking, quadding, camping, or just heading into the backcountry behind Summerland with no particular destination.

And then there are the memories that are just Faulder.

One of mine will always be sitting on our back deck listening to the live music from Randy’s parties up on Bathville, clear across the valley. You’d open Facebook and see people saying “Turn it up!” You might have been miles away, but somehow you always felt like you were at the party.

Now we want to hear your story.

Since the Bald Range Fire, sharing our GoFundMe through larger community groups has been incredibly important in helping our small community reach beyond itself. As time passes, getting that visibility is becoming harder — but the need for it isn’t going away.

Our total-loss families are only beginning to discover the gaps between what was lost, what insurance and other programs cover, and what it will actually take to rebuild. Some of those gaps are obvious today. Others won’t show themselves for months.

So instead of simply asking you to share another fundraiser, help us tell the story of the community behind it.

Looking forward to being part of Business & Bites: The Road Back tomorrow.

The last several weeks have given “The Road Back” a whole new meaning — from losing our family home, to keeping Patan Heating moving, to helping get the Free Store off the ground for our community.

I’m looking forward to sharing a little of that experience tomorrow and, more importantly, talking about how we keep the momentum moving.

Thanks to the Penticton Chamber for inviting me to be part of the conversation.

Tomorrow, we’re bringing the conversation to the table.

The Trout Creek Valley — almost unrecognizable.

Earlier this year, Kelly, the girls and I rode the quads through here, following the old KVR through the Trout Creek Valley and the deep-cut canyon below.

I remember being down at the bottom, looking up at those steep, heavily treed canyon walls and thinking how breathtaking this place was.

Now I’m standing above that same valley looking down — and once again it takes my breath away, but for an entirely different reason.

So much was taken. The trees, the landscape and so much of what made this place familiar. You can see the path of the fire carved across the hillsides and through the valley.

The landscape will heal. Green will return and new trees will grow. But the scar left behind will be here for a very long time.

It’s hard to believe that only months ago we were down there as a family, looking up in awe.

Now I’m looking down, still in awe — just for a very different reason.

FREE STORE UPDATE — YOU FILLED IT! ❤️

After one month, we can officially say something pretty incredible: our community has filled the Free Store!

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity we’ve received from across the Okanagan and beyond, our current needs are met and we are officially at capacity. For now, we are pausing donations while more of our members come through and take what they need.

To all total-loss families in RDOS Area F and Summerland: if you haven’t been through yet, please come see us. Take what you need — that is exactly why all of this was donated!

We’re continuing to talk directly with our families about what they need as they move into new accommodations. As more families come through and those needs change, we’ll let everyone know exactly what is needed and when we’re ready to accept donations again.

But pausing donations does NOT mean we stop the momentum.

Right now, one of the biggest ways you can help is simply to keep following and sharing our story. Keep our total-loss families and communities visible. Keep talking about what’s happening as we move from the immediate aftermath into recovery and rebuilding.

And please, support the local businesses that have supported us. So many businesses throughout our communities have stepped up without hesitation — donating goods, time, equipment, services and whatever else they could offer. When you see us recognize one of them, give them a follow, share their business and support them when you can.

That’s how we keep the momentum moving.

One month ago, we had an empty store.

Today, you filled it. ❤️
