The "Flushable" Myth: A Costly Lesson in Plumbing

The marketing on the package might say "flushable," but the reality inside your sewer lines tells a very different story. These photos from a recent service call show exactly what happens when those wipes meet your pipes.

Unlike toilet paper, which is designed to break down almost instantly upon contact with water, "flushable" wipes are made of tough synthetic fibers. They don’t dissolve; instead, they catch on any small imperfection or root in your line and begin to weave together.

What You’re Seeing in These Photos
The "Wipe Rope": As you can see, our sewer auger (the steel cable used to clear blockages) didn't just find a small clog—it pulled out a literal rope of intact wipes.

The Excavation: Because these wipes create such a dense, heavy mass, they often can't be cleared by standard drain cleaning alone. In this case, we had to dig deep underground just to access the pipe and manually remove the obstruction.

A Total Blockage: These wipes act like a net, catching grease, hair, and other debris until your sewer line is completely sealed off, leading to messy and unsanitary backups into the home.

Protect Your Home and Your Wallet
The most important thing to remember is that your toilet is not a trash can. Avoiding wipes, paper towels, and feminine hygiene products in your plumbing is the simplest way to prevent an emergency situation.
